It was difficult to find Roscommon Friary as its not well signposted. It is located at the back of the Abbey Hotel and up as short pathway. There are some really wonderful stone carvings and beautiful ornate tomb. No admission charge and Well worth a visit !

This a is a ruined abbey which dates back to the 13th century. Despite being a ruin there is much to see; many of the old walls, entrance, feature window opening still intact.
There is a peace about the place, it sits in its own site, and allows visitors to contemplate what it must have once been.

The Dominican friary was founded by Felimid O'Conor in 1267. It was burned in 1270 and struck by lightning in 1308. By 1445 it was in disrepair when an indulgence was granted to restore its fabric and in 1578 it was granted along with the castle and rest of the town to the Protestant, Sir Nicholas Malby.
A tower which existed in the 18th century has collapsed and there is little evidence of it left.
What remains is a large T shaped building. with many lancet windows. On the east and west gables new windows have been installed in the 15th century. Leask has made a conjectural restoration of these windows in his book 'Irish Churches and monastic building Volume 3'
For the tourist today there is much to see.

Fine architecture with a world of history attached including the tomb of Phelim O'Conor a high king of Ireland. My GG Grandfather is also buried there much to my surprise! It was too cold to concentrate so come in summer.

I can see why people have trouble finding this place. The only way we knew it existed was because we were staying in the Abbey hotel.
There is ample parking and a nice gravel path to the entrance.
Information on the ruins is also provided.

Roscommon Dominican Friary church is almost impossible to find.
Guide books say that it is near the railway station- perhaps as the crow flies it is- but as your average tourist travels it is not.
The only hint that it exists is the Abbey Hotel.
In order to find it you have to go in a back lane to the hotel.
Even having gone down the lane it is impossible to find.
There is a sign which says:
no climbing.
no metal detectors.
Trip hazards.
Children.
Do not litter.
no dogs allowed.

Does it tell you how to find the abbey? No.
Does it tell you about the history of the edifice? No.
Does it give you a phone number for a guide? no.

If you succeed in finding the abbey......
You will find a 13th century structure which was a Dominican Friary.
The windows which were installed into the old structure in the 15th century were amongst the finest achievements of Irish religious architecture ever.
What a shame that nobody on site can advise one of this fact.

Sited on the edge of Roscommon Town this Abbey is a great place to visit. It has been out of use for hundreds of years but you can still get the sense of how important the place was. One of the O Conor Kings of Connacht is buried here.

Chanced across this bit of hidden history while passing through Roscommon. The signage to this is not great and almost invissible even 200m from the Friary depending on your direction of travel.

Access is from the car park and down a grass pathway that bends 90 degrees as you approach. The Friary is no as large or well preserved as others in Ireland but there there is enough of the structure standing to give a good impression of what is was like in it's hay day.

A number of graves are located in and around the structure.

There is no entry fee and plenty of free parking within 200m of the site. A great way to break a journey.

We were in Roscommon for an archaeology conference and were staying at the nearby hotel. It was rather late at night when we visited but we were amazed to discover that this is the friary that contains the carved tomb with the carvings of the gallowglass on the base.
