This is a reply reg Parking: Just a few steps beyond the Center, where one visitor drove down the brick walk way, there are dozens of free parking spaces. All of Turners Falls has plenty of free parking, near the Center, and immediately beyond, in the residential streets, a huge parking lot on 3rd street, and free parking along Ave A. The warning in a previous post is unwarranted. This town feels so relaxed, precisely because no one thinks about meters. Our sidewalks are wide and tree studded.
And again, the parking lot above the Discovery Center's little grass knoll has never been full, as long as I live here. There are piknik tables year round.

Great place, beautiful grounds and views of the river and canal.
My only complaint? Parking. As first time visiting, we pulled into the Centers driveway, saw a half dozen Handi-Cap spaces on the right. Figured, the parking must be down this driveway....
NOT NOT NOT!
We ignorantly started to go down the driveway road, to be met with people yelling at us! I was so embarrassed.
Can you please spare the embarrassing experience for future visitors by placing some sort of sign? A barrier made of a saw horse painted yellow? Seems like little to ask, for the safety of all.

I went to the Great Falls Discovery Center in October. It is a small museum that highlights the impact humans have had on the Connecticut River Watershed. It has many dioramas showing what animals could be found in the area. It is set next to the Canal Side Rail Trail. It was the most interesting thing I found in Turner Falls. I would not make a special trip out if not already in the area.

This attraction is free and covers the natural history and wildlife of the Connecticut River water shed. This section is housed inside an Old Mill. There was someone there from the park to answer questions.Once inside it’s a self guided tour of the many dioramas. Many with lfe size animals, don’t miss the bear my husband almost did.
Gaze out the window at the rushing changing waters then make sure you walk the grounds. We were there about two hours.

I spent an hour here looking at the exhibits about the wildlife around the length of the CT River. The full size dioramas are well done. They often have talks and other special activities. It is right along the Canalside Bike Trail. You can see the CT River racing by.

The Dept of Conservation & Recreation has a grest theme for Sept 2018: logging and paper-making on the Connecticut River, centering on Turners Falls. A one-hour movie by a talented local naturalist/historian covered 45 years of log drives from the River's source to the Turner's dam was well-balanced, absorbing and covered facets not normally mentioned, esp. the fact that artifacts were often submerged when the dam was raised 100 years ago.
Future programs will feature a walk by the power canal during its annual drain-&-clean period. Only drawback was variable sound in the room.

Lots of interesting dioramas set up, involving local animals. Very interesting and kid-friendly. Nice bike path out back that follows the river.

Second Friday of month local, often acoustic, musicians are scheduled, and Feb 2018 was a piano-vocal duo doing less-well-known show tunes -- and doing them as well as any New York club act. The space is live, and capacity of 50 or so makes an intimate setting. Donation-based admission and coffee-treats, future acts are guitar, banjo, hammer dulcimer, etc.

The Great Falls Discovery Center has something for nearly everyone. The real-life standing exhibits are a fine introduction to wild life in the area and simulate creatures and living conditions well.
One Friday evening a month there is a variety of live music offered for one's enjoyment and a free-will offering.
Often 2-4 hour presentations are freely offered engaging audiences in topics of interest regarding the history of the area; early inhabitants or geology are popular topics.
