Breathtaking views of Lake Huron and the lighthouse. Birds galore and trail was a mix of packed clay, dirt and small gravel. Well maintained. Tree foliage with some color change. Very lucky to see a bald eagle as well.

Tawas was the first of many, many lighthouses we were visiting in Michigan during a week's vacation spent primarily in the UP. For being the first, the lighthouse and grounds left a good impression. There was some work taking place on the lighthouse but the whole area is easy to walk around including going down to the beach. A small but well-stocked gift shop with very friendly employees was appreciated.

We drove down from Alpina, MI on a Saturday, July 16, 2022. Last year we were here but got flooded out of our plans. So this time the intrepid ones made it. We scheduled another lighthouse for this day also, Sturgeon Point, just 40 minutes north of here.
Being located on State Park land, you have to pay to park. Then you pay another small fee to tour the light and the house. NfM. Normal for Michigan.
There is so much to see here for your 5 bucks, and many people just climb the tower, get their passport stamped, maybe buy a souvenir at the very adequate gift shop, and move on. That was our plan on this day.
Tours are scheduled and accompanied by volunteer keepers. You get your receipt at the gift shop in a separate building, noting the time for your tour. There are a limited number of people permitted on each tour. There is no free ranging inside. It's very structured and we like that.
Be sure and check their website for days and hours. Then it's first come first served.
The climb to the top is mild. Young folks just sprint up the iron spiral stairs. There's not much room up there, we had to keep shifting around to share the best views. The tour guide up there, major Tom from Buffalo NY, kept things moving along and orderly.
We like that.
Fritomann is happy now that we finally got to tour this very popular light station.

One of the nice lighthouses on my shoreline tour of Michigan. You will need a Michigan Recreation Pass since it's in a State Park. There are some nice and easy trails around the lighthouse and there is easy access to Tawas Bay and Lake Huron.
The lighthouse itself is in great condition. There was no access to the tower do to covid I believe and even then, it's something like $5 and is guided, so you can't wander on your own. There are a few info boards around it and a nice little gift shop.

We weren't able to tour the lighthouse, but it's still a very nice place to visit. You can park in the lot and can easily walk to the lighthouse as well as the beach. The entire area is very pretty and it was very fun for my 4 year-old son! Definitely a must-stop if you are in the area.

Paid $9 to get in to the park to tour the lighthouse. Once we got to lighthouse there were signs that said tours are not being given this year because they cannot disinfect the hard services, however the gift shop was open!. That would have been nice to know before we paid to get in.

The lighthouse itself was closed but it was nice to walk around and take pictures. It seems well-maintained. There were tons of birds in the area, apparently it is a big spot for bird watching because of the migration path.

Although much of the beach is gone due to the high water levels, this is still a great place to visit. We came here and walked just passed the lighthouse to view a spectacular sunset on our anniversary.

Unlike the rest of Tawas Point State Park, this lighthouse is well taken care of. The lighthouse, buildings & gift shop were closed due to covid, but you can walk around it & take pictures.
Take the short path from the parking lot. There's information boards telling you the history. We looked in the windows into the kitchen area. Looked nice.

Tawas Point Lighthouse sits within Tawas Point State Park. The grounds around the lighthouse are beautiful. While we didn't tour the lighthouse itself, we did visit the gift shop at the base, and wander around the grounds. Overall, a great location to stop at.

When would be the best time for a tour of the point where the monarchs gather in the fall?
Thank you

Hi. Yes. Great question. I'm not exact on dates but I think it just began. We saw more than the usual few. It became apparent to me then that season might be starting.

How far of walk from parking

The parking lot is only a few minutes walk to the light house, and the camp grounds are a 5 or 10 minute walk away.
