Although the shoe house is unique, it is no longer open to the public. It has a fence surrounding it with a locked gate. Also there is no ice cream 😢

Probably interesting, but not open (off season?) - web site is so poor you don't know anything about times or dates. We contented ourselves with looking at it from outside.

This is such a unique and fun stop while traveling! It is a little off the main highway, but very worth the stop! We paid $5 to self-tour the tiny shoe house. Everything is very well laid out and there are great explanations of all the artifacts! It is worth the cost. The gift shop is very small but there were some cute items. We definitely grabbed a few things. There were only a handful of options for ice cream, but it was very tasty and worth the price. There are lots of seating outside and even a few tables inside to enjoy your ice cream. Overall, it is a perfect stop!

So Neat! :-) I saw a story about it and decided to drive 1.5 hours from the DC Suburbs to Beautiful South-Central PA.
It is such a quaint small-town road side attraction, that was actually a Shoe-Seller's home -- how cool is that? I went on a beautiful day that wasn't crowded.
Easy to get to, a very fair price ($5/person for the Tour of this 5 split-levels home laden with personal/local history), some parking is available, plus a port-a-potty (but not the wide kind that are wheelchair accessible). I am in a wheelchair, and although I did not see any designated handicap parking spots, I did not have any trouble parking. The entrance to the bottom floor snack bar (plenty of hot & cold drinks, snacks, baked goods, and DELICIOUS Beck's icecream) & Gift Shoppe (grab yourself a t-shirt or mug, SEND A POST CARD) is wheelchair accessible. The upper levels are not wheelchair accessible (so I could not take the actual self-guided tour)...mobility-challenged visitors using walkers probably can, but there are a lot of stairs.
Bring a picnic lunch (get your sodas, chips & icecream from the shoppe) and sit at the picnic bench by the Cherry tree, sit back, relax, absorb the tranquil surroundings, and enjoy a nice day trip by yourself or with your loving family & closest friends. Share the good times and send a post card.
A day well worth the drive, truly a day well spent.
Enjoy! :-)
{*Oh -- make sure you stop by 'Maple Donuts' in nearby York, and get a Maple-Glazed donut with coffee or milk...Fantastic! Reminds me of Tim Horton's in Canada}

This is a beautiful house it was bigger inside than what I expected. The ice crean was good. The only problem was the parking lot was small.

This fun stop was the Haines Shoe House. It was built by a shoe salesman named Mahlon Haines in 1948 as a promotional gimmick to sell shoes. It worked! Touring the house was interesting. It was like an early “tiny house” with 3 bedrooms, kitchen, living room and bathrooms. The history is fascinating. The tour cost $5 and was worth it. You got to see the advertising memorabilia of the original owner. The gift shop is small and there is an ice cream shop within the space. Great photo op.

It is nothing exceptional....but it's an interesting stop on your journey. We purchased ice cream in a cup and sat outside and enjoyed the peace and quiet. There is a tour of the home, but we elected not to take it.

Unfortunately it was closed due to C-19 during our visit but still quite a sight! We parked the car along the road/driveway and took lots of pictures! "Only in America"! We'll come back when the C-19 blows over and when we come back for a Hersey Bears game.

Nice people, strange place, interesting history. Would have given it 5*, but they;d run out of vanilla ice cream (the only one I really like), and the raspberry ice in a chocolate biscuity thing wasn't a huge favourite!
