A great place to visit! Very dog friendly, lots of water stations and spare leads if you forget a short one. The golf buggy was perfect for my mother in law, she managed to get a great tour of the gardens which she didn’t was going to be possible. Staff were incredibly helpful, we will definitely be back!

We expected to keep our dog on a lead during the visit but not to be told we could only use a short fixed lead they issue at reception?
Strange , don't waste your money you and your dog won't enjoy .

We decided to visit here for a walk and look at the spring blooms. Unfortunately we were a little too early in the season as there were only few camellias out, and some hellebores and a few daffodils. Our mistake, and not the fault of the gardens, as some reviews seem to suggest. We were able to buy some lovely polyanthus, and daisies, reasonably priced at £2.50 for a pack of 6, and had a lovely bowl of soup in the cafe, which was quite busy and took some time, as one of the drinks machines had broken down, again not the fault of the place, just unfortunate. These things happen|

Very disappointed with our visit. The website talks of two areas - the gardens and the Parkland. The parkland is fine, but my back garden has more plants and colour than these! The Victorian Garden was planted sparsly with hyacinths. There were a few areas with daffodils. Other than that little planting at all. When the rhododendrens come into flower it will look better but to me that will be a woodland setting rather formal gardens. I've attached a photo of one bed in front of the hall which is planted with grasses which have been trimmed back. A prominently positioned bed with just grass?
We knew from the website the cafe was offering a limited menu. The only food on offer was cake - apparently the sandwiches hadn't arrived yet! Cafes are always a cash cow to these sort of venues - what a wasted opportunity as covid has now become so much less of an issue.

It was a wintery day but we still enjoyed walking around the parkland and gardens. The park is extensive and we didn't do it all so we'll be back when the rhododendrons are out to wander some more. There are several monuments and follies - including a convincing castle ruin. The gardens were not quite what we expected looking at the plans - the hedges around the various sections are high and the insides mainly shrubs. We saw several herds of deer around the park too.
It was our first time there, I expect it will be more relaxing on a warmer day - we still enjoyed the fresh air though.
Cafe is the usual NT offerings.

It was great value for money, the gardens were large, beautiful, well kept and clean. We had a pushchair and the paths were good.

Really nice to walk round, great for kids. Certainly recommend a visit. Sometimes they do rope off areas but only for the safety of others.

Arrived here after a hour and 20 minutes drive to find the whole place closed! However the website said it was open and we were among plenty others turning up!

Great walk around these gardens in glorious winter sunshine. Great views and a good National Trust property. Plenty of easy parking. Very good coffee shop.

Historic footpaths, in public use for more than 20 years have now been closed by national trust. Outrageous behaviour. Very questionable legally speaking. Cynical money grabbing by the national trust.

The previous trust spent £2m repairing the roof. It should be open to visitors...

No they don't but if you don't want to go into the garden you can walk around the edge which is lovely. You can go as far as the visitor centre for a drink etc but not through into the actual gardens.
Is they a discount for disability people who r on D L A and does carer av to pay
Claire W
Barnsley, UK4 aportes
Hi there! Disabled visitor's are charged the standard admission price, but carers are admitted for free. There is some useful information about facilities at the Gardens on the Visitors with Disabilities tab on the website. Hope that is helpful.

Wentworth Castle Gardens lies between the villages of Stainborough and Hood Green, near Barnsley, about 3 miles from Barnsley town centre.
Hi there!
Services 23, 23A and 24 from Barnsley Interchange to Penistone, Stocksbridge and Denby Dale run along Lowe Lane to the Gardens. Ask the driver for "Northern College" if they are not sure which stop is the closest to the Gardens. Check out the Traveline website for up to date service times. Hope this is helpful.

Claire W

Yes, we have a cafe which serves hot and cold options. Soups are home made and usually veggie, jacket potatoes usually available and generally a veggie pie or panini available too. Cakes and coffees too.

How wheelchair accessible are the grounds?
Claire W
Barnsley, UK4 aportes
The Gardens are hilly, and there is a full Access Statement on our website under the tab Visitors with Disabilities, these are the key points:
Car Parking:
There is a 5 minute walk uphill from the visitor car park to the Long Barn Visitor Centre. Disabled visitors may use a parking area nearer to the Visitor Centre, however spaces are limited. Please follow signs to Disabled car parking from the main car park.
The Long Barn Visitor Centre which includes our shop and café is fully accessible. There are accessible toilet facilities on the lower and upper floors and a lift is available.
The Gardens - The paths as far as the lower garden and the Victorian Conservatory are well surfaced and are at a 1:12 gradient or less. However, further towards the castle the gradients increase and some of the surfaces are grass or unsurfaced paths and may be as steep as 1:7 in places.
There are some steps in the Garden, but there is always an alternative route.
Golf Buggies:
The Trust has a golf buggy which may be pre-booked for the use of visitors who find the walk through the gardens difficult, but please note this is not an adapted vehicle and the driver needs to be able to control foot pedals.
There is a charge of £5 to hire a buggy to help cover the costs of maintenance. Users of the golf buggy need to be over 17 years and must pass a competence test before taking the buggy out. For more information or to reserve a buggy before your visit, please call (01226) 776040. Pre-booking is strongly recommended.
I hope this helps, please ring us for any further information.

Can you Get there by any bus-service? From York?
Claire W
Barnsley, UK4 aportes
Hello, yes it is possible. From York we would recommend coming by train to Barnsley interchange, where you can catch a bus to "Stainborough". Services 23, 23A or 24 pass the Gardens. Service details can be found on the Yorkshire Travel website or on Wentworth Castle's website "directions pages".
Hope that helps.
