This is such a great place to visit as there is so much to see and do. It also give you chance to go on many ships and see how things were. The staff were friendly and helpful and very informative.
The best part was seeing the remnants of henry’s ship and seeing artefacts still intact.
Didn’t have time to see it all but ticket is for 12 months so can return, so we will be returning to see the rest of the site as so vast.

We only saw HMS Victory and the Mary Rose, we spent about 3 hours looking at the exhibits. Completely engrossing, wish we had more time!

This is a small, but nice museum. It cost $3 per person at the time of our visit. There is a wealth of info found here & we enjoyed it. We would recommend this museum to others.

I went with my family yesterday. It was an excellent experience. The boats such as the Warrior are really interesting and the actors who explain the history are helpful and interesting.
The Mary Rose is just amazing. How it was discovered and raised is all explained and is very interesting.
We had lunch in one of the cafes on site and the food was not bad and a reasonable price.

Small museum, one room really, apparently confused by many on Trip Advisor with the much larger museum across the Atlantic in the UK. This museum is in Virginia, and tells the story of Norfolk Naval Shipyard - which, despite its name, is actually in Portsmouth, not Norfolk. The museum is quiet, not busy, and has some really interesting displays - inside & out. Just outside the entrance is the bell for the battleship USS Mississippi (BB-41), as well as an armor slab and anchor taken from Norfolk Naval Yard’s Trophy Park, formerly on the US’ first battleship, USS Texas of Spanish-American War fame, built at the shipyard just down the road. Historic cannon decorate the sidewalk, and it’s worth walking out to the river and down to the lightship (also part of the museum, but on the other side of a large building) since the path takes you past even more historic cannon. Inside the museum, highlights for me were primarily the artifacts from repairing British ships during WWII (kamikaze bits, shrapnel) as well as the models and the paper retrieved from the wreck of USS Arizona (BB-39) at Pearl Harbor. They have a small gift counter, and admission is collected at a small ticket window between the two sets of doors. They are more comfortable with cash than card - they acted like they were not used to credit cards for donations. Don’t forget to look up to the ceiling when you walk in - there’s a bell from a WWII destroyer just to the right of the door that’s a treasure in its own right! A major plus is the nice, big bathrooms and the water fountain. Parking was easy enough, I just grabbed a street spot and walked over. Note the lightship is currently closed for restoration, but they still show a video of it in the museum if interested. They also have a big Fresnel lighthouse lens. Overall, a history buff can easily spend an hour here, without doing the light ship. Lightly interested folks could cover it in half an hour. I’ve attached pictures to rectify all the wrong photos that are affiliated here on Trip Advisor as well.

Friendly expert volunteers made my day visit exceptional in each exhibit. The millions of capital spent, and to be spent, brought together some of the most improtant ship history in the world. But the guides and answer people here make it a great way to invest a full day learning with unparreled visuals.
I also enjoyedthe adjacent beach fronts and retail plaza.

It's free and a few steps from the public water taxi that takes you to the stop at Norfolk Waterside. The museum is focused on the role of the Norfolk area and its shipyards in U.S. naval history. You can walk through it in 20 minutes or read every display, including a video about light boats, in under two hours. Then take a walk up and down Old Town Portsmouth (Emanuel AME Church is 1/2 mile away) to make it a half-day trip.

This could have been a great museum but the bright lights inside made it almost impossible to get good pictures of anything behind glass. I finally just gave up trying. If the reflections had not been so bad in the glass (it was very distracting) I would have given the museum 5 stars.
The museum covers 350 years of history and they suggest you give a $3 donation. If you aren't bothered by reflections, you will probably enjoy this museum

I was wondering if a regular civilian could visit the Shipyards? I am interested in seeing the sport where the Russians and Japanese signed their ear treaty?

I see pictures of British tall ships, but don't see any mention of them. Are they at the Portsmouth museum?

The tall ships moor at the piers in Portsmouth as well as Norfolk when the parade of tall ships come to town other than the American Rover which is in Norfolk and offers day cruses aboard it, there are no tall ship here except when the parade comes to town.
