Well, it's hard to review because we couldn't actually get there. From Va Beach, you have to park at Back Bay Refuge and then walk in on either on the trail or the beach. We knew the trail was closed (it closes Nov 1 until spring), but when we got there, the gate to the trail was wide open and there were no signs about closing. So we headed out down the trail. About a mile later, we got to a second - closed - gate and the trail was clearly closed, and there was no route to the beach from there. So we had to turn around and walk half way back in order to get to a cut-through to the beach, and at that point we'd already walked 1.5 miles and really didn't have the time or energy to do another 3 or so through sand to get to the cape. We did walk a bit on the beach, though, and it was lovely and fairly deserted in November. A few people passed us on fat tire bikes, and we were envious. So if you decide to walk in, don't be fooled by the open gate - if it's after Nov. 1, then go straight to the Seaside trail and just walk on the beach. There are few cut-through's from the Cape road to the beach, and the trail itself is pretty boring. If you really want to get to False Cape, maybe try a fat tire bike at low tide.

This beautiful state park is the southern most park in the state of Virginia. The park features miles of trails through forests, wetlands and beaches, past several ruins of yesteryear and this area’s heyday as a hunting destination. This is a multi use park that coexists with the national wildlife refuge as well as a local park area. This gorgeous location is outstanding for anyone of any age. Highly recommend - pay close attention to the park website so as not to miss the excellent presentations put on by park employees and volunteers.

Booked a tram tour for us and family visiting from Poland. It was a great experience, knowledgeable tour guide, plenty of photo ops and places to stop along the way.

I have lived in Virginia beach for the past 20 years and have had the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge and False Cape State Park on my bucket list. I finally was able to make a reservation for the Tram tour operated by the state park. It was a pleasant 3 hour tour led by a very competent intern. We were able to view much of these two parks and had several stops. You should check the time of the year because in late October we hardly had seen any wild life. The Wash Woods settlement ruins were very interesting. Unfortunately these parks are not very friendly towards persons with disabilities. Able bodied people capable of hiking in 5 miles each way or by riding a bicycle can really enjoy these parks. Since there is limited tram service and automobiles are prohibited these parks are not for persons with disabilities or limited mobility.

This is a remote, beautiful state Park. You have to hike or bike through Back Bay refuge to get to the park. If you are biking don't go past the visitor center. The trails south of the visitor center don't support bikes. The beach is also not easy to bike on. The sand is too soft to bike on.

I just went with 3 friends for a night in Mid-May. I was worried about the flies after reading the reviews, but did not encounter any. The weather had been cool leading up to it, and I'm thinking that when the heat gets here late May they start ramping up. We biked in- HIGHLY RECOMMEND. Unless you are going in cooler months, hiking in with no cover will be fairly miserable. We used a bike trailer to stash a lot of our gear and it worked well.
It's a wonderfully remote experience with practically no one on the beach, which you can camp on if you wish.
We did see one cottonmouth on the road but that was it, which was surprising. Watch your step and use your headlamp at night and you should be fine. Turtles, birds and other wildlife abound. Lots more to see than we had time for and I will be back!

We drove an hour to get here and the road to get there is closed unless it’s peak season. You have to walk three miles to get to the park because cars aren’t allowed when it’s closed.

Incredible gem of a state park, both remote and unspoiled. Bike and take a lunch. A unique experience.

This is such a different park as there is an assist by man to help the birds. We did the tram ride and had Anna the Park Ranger as our guide. She was excellent and very knowledgeable. This park is really remote and we did not see many people. Facilities in the middle of the park.

We biked through Back Bay National Refuge to False Cape. Easy ride. Then bikes from entrance of state park to cemetery site. Took 3 hours. Nice easy ride.

Anyone had any issues with snakes around the pit toilets? My gf is a bit concerned about that.
I would like to bring my dog to false cape, but back bay doesn’t allow dogs, how do I get to false cape with my dog?

You could arrive by boat.

I don’t have a bike. I’d be hiking with my toddler on my back. Is this feasible with me needing to carry snacks and drinks for my baby? I just don’t want to be ill prepared.

Is your plan to take the tram in and then hike around? I'd say that is doable. But if you are talking about walking from the Refuge to the park, I wouldn't recommend it unless you have done a ten mile round trip hike in the past. It is 5 miles from the parking lot at the refuge to our park.
Has anyone been bitten by any of the snakes? Do the snakes try to stay away from humans? Do you see a lot of snakes around here?

We did not see a single snake in the two days we visited. However, a fellow traveler had a video of one but He told us they stay away from humans.
We just need to pay attention to where we are walking.
Have a great day!
We are planning a camping trip, we have never been and are driving from northern va. We know it's a 8.95 mile bike ride to the camp sites and suggestions on camping there? Are camp fires allowed? If not suggested food? Any drinkable water near by the camp sites?

We did not camp but did ride down to the camp areas. There are pit toilets and there is water available at the camp/vistors center that is about 1/2 mile from the camping areas. We saw quite a few people with trailers attached to their bikes to carry equipment and water too and from. Not sure about fires. Probably have to call and ask.

Are the bike paths paved or all dirt? I've got an 8, 10, and 13 yr old, so need to understand difficulty of biking. Can we access the beach/water over the dunes or is that restricted? Are we allowed to swim at the beach? Thanks!

Sandston, VA11 aportes
Nothing is paved. Gravel or dirt or a combination. You can access the beach at a couple of crossing areas but they are very hard to push bikes through. You can swim in the ocean but there are no guards and it isn't a designated swimming beach. Keep in mind that you have to bike from the parking at the Back Bay Wildlife Refuge which is 6 miles to the park.

How far is the walk to get there and where do you park at to even start walking? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

The previous answer is correct. Be advised the Back Bay Refuge is a fee entry ($5/car??). It is quite a hike just to get to the False Cape Visitor Center. Then, you still have to hoof it to get anywhere in the park. Biking is the way to go.
There is an "Occasional" tram which will ferry you to and from the Refuge to the FCSP, It, too, is a fee situation. Call the FCSP office for details on schedules and costs.
There are almost no amenities in FCSP. Take your water, snack, sunscreen, and bug repellent .... and, of course, your camera.

Can anyone recommend a camp site that you know to be a good spot or have had a good experience with? I'm looking at going in May and would like to stay as close to the ocean as possible, if not on the beach itself.

False Cape may NOT be a good choice for you if you are looking to camp and then take in the sights or enjoy some of the restaurants in the Virginia Beach area. First, it is a drive to the far end of Sandbridge.Second, once there, it is about a 6 mile hike to the camping area on a gravel trail. This means carrying àll your gear, including water. Third, it is primitive. Bathroom facilities consist of an out house. If all you want is camping in the trees,or on the beach, and you are not afraid of the primitive conditions, this is the place for you. If this is not your cup of tea, you may want to check out First Landing State Park. It is close to the beach and there are some nice walking, hiking, and biking trails plus modern conveniences. It is right off a road that will take you to places like Fort Story and the ocean front with shops, restaurants, the boardwalk, fishing pier, etc.
