I loved my time at Russell Cave. I visited on a chilly December morning and was the only visitor present...so, nice a quiet. There is a short walk through the forest on a boardwalk to get to the cave opening. The history here is remarkable. It was fasinating to think of human ancestors walking these same grounds. Be sure to take the short hike on the trails. Moss was covering the asphalt, making it an incredible site to view. At certain places where the sun reached the ground, the trail resembled the yellow brick road. The rangers at the visitor center were very kind and helpful.

The area of the cave is beautiful. And the cave is interesting with 10,000 years of history. Nice walk to the cave. The visitor center is being renovated and the temporary center had no film and only a few exhibits. But this site is still worth a visit.

I have always heard to Russell Cave- had the opportunity to visit this unique place today. The temporary welcome center had great photos of the history of the cave... the short walk down to the cave was so scenic- trees, shrubs, birds, and the cave entrance was stunning!!! I would love to participate in a geological dig here. A must see!!!

This place is underwhelming. Looks like it was operated by a National Geographic important guy and ended up getting turned over to the NPS at some point. Otherwise, I highly doubt it would qualify as a site in itself. It's a very quick and easy walk down a boardwalk to the cave. Yes, it's a cave that looks like someone recently excavated a tiny portion of it. Nothing otherwise to see. The visitor's center is straight from the 1970's (or at least by design) and the ranger there wasn't born before the 90's, so he was bored to tears. We avoided the 1 mile trail due to lack of upkeep and likely slippery nature. Overall, a disappointing NPS visit.

This is a fun NPS site to visit if you're in the area and it's a quick visit overall. We were driving down 24 in TN and decided to stop in as it's only about a 10-15 minute detour to get to the cave. The visitor center is small, but informative and we were able to learn a lot about how the cave was used by various cultures throughout history. There's a short walk down to the cave and you're able to walk on to a platform that overlooks the dig area where artifacts have been found. It's a nice way to learn about some local history and we enjoyed our visit!

FYI, there's really no cell signal once you're in the visitor center parking lot, so just come prepared.

Not much to see at the cave except a few informational plaques, the hike is nice

A small museum at the visitor center with bathrooms.

There is a birding trail at the monument.

The highlight of the Russel Cave monument is not the cave, it's the very short and very steep trail, which started as a blacktop paved trail (though now well populated by massy material that is slick when wet.) The trail was filled with wildflowers and other emerging spring growth. Although only a mile and a quarter overall, it gains 400 feet, making it a nice little aerobic addition to the day. It was not far out of our way after leaving Chattanooga, and we thought it was worth the trip. THe cave is pretty cool too, but as noted, is not explorable by the general public.

This is really off the beaten path but we are all about visiting National parks and monuments. We knew from reading online that you could not go in the cave. We were staying in Mentone not to far so decided to check it out. It was a pretty drive through the countryside. There is a boardwalk that takes you to the entrance of the cave. It is a large opening. We visited in early April and the wild flowers along the trail were beautiful. Small but interesting exhibits in the visitor center. Nice clean bathrooms. Nice picnic area. Take a few minutes to read the brochure and you will me amazed about how long the cave has been used by people and what was found.

We were disappointed in our trip to Russell cave national monument because we did not know in advance that you can’t actually tour the cave. You can only go up to the entrance of the cave. The museum does have some interesting artifacts but it is tiny.

On the plus side, it is free and there are nice picnic areas.

The bottom line is that it is worth a look if you are in the area anyway, but it is not worth traveling very far out of the way.
