I took a couple of friends and my wife to the Astronomical Tour experience offered by Egon in Southern Cambara in January 2025.
The Tour is held in a private rural property, about 6km on land road from the centre of Cambará. Transportation can be done in your own vehicle or with Egon, depending on availability - which must be checked in advance. Vehicles adapted for off-road roads are not required. However, “rebound” vehicles can have difficulties. We went in a rental car that we were using on the trip (Hyundai HB20 model hatch).
The meeting point is made in the centre of Cambará, near the mother church. Here attention is required because as the activity depends on luminosity and specific weather conditions, delays will not be tolerated, as these can compromise the quality of the experience of the group as a whole. Punctuality is essential.
I would like to leave a personal thank you to Egon, who made it a matter to guide us on the best ways to get to Cambara and to help organize our arrival so that we do not be late. The affection spent by him was such that, knowing that we would arrive in the city only a few minutes before the time of departure, he made the question of calling our hotel and requesting permission for us to carry out the “check-in” after the tour - something that was promptly served by the staff of the hotel, who knew it by the name.
The tour is not an exclusive activity, which means other people can participate in the activity with you. In our case, we were four and the day there was another couple who participated in the activity with us. This is good because it gives you the opportunity to meet different people and views. I don’t know the limit of people who can participate in the activity on the same day, but I do not believe that it is a number that can compromise the quality of delivery of the experience.
The activity lasts about 4 hours, in our case, from 18:00 to 22:00. Maybe the time may be different at different times of the year, as the start of the activity coincides with sunset. I suggest that this be checked in advance.
During the tour, in addition to looking up, we also looked down. Geomorphological concepts are worked especially interesting for those who are not Gaúchos. Our group, made up of natural people from Rio de Janeiro, Goiás and Minas Gerais, learned new concepts about the region. Still, the gauchos can also take advantage of another opportunity to learn a little more about the land itself - which is enriching.
On the tour, some photographs are taken by Egon, who, in addition to being an astronomical guide, is also a professional photographer. It is expected that everyone will participate in the photos and, for some of them - especially those that will be taken during the night - it is recommended to wear bright and vibrant clothes, so that there is a greater emphasis in the photo.
The activity is recommended for older than 16 years. Maybe the youngest have difficulty following and concentrating on the activity. If available, I do not believe that there is an upper age limit to enjoy the activity.
Regarding the visibility of the sky, it will be decisive for the performance of the activity. Egon uses professional predictions to try to anticipate unforeseen events. Still, we depend on the cooperation of climate phenomena that escape our control. During our experience, for much of the tour clouds interrupted the visibility of the sky - which even made Egon verbalize that maybe our experience would be cancelled. Despite this, at a certain point we had great visibility of the sky and we were able to observe instigating phenomena.
Even though for about half the experience heaven was not cooperating with us, I suggest that this should not be taken so seriously or discourage you, since in our case, during these periods, Egon entertained us with stories told professionally! The experience left nothing to be desired in any way.
The activity is carried out, for the most part, in a field area, with some stones on the ground. We walked a little through different points, but I don't believe that people with disabilities are prevented from participating in the tour. Folding chairs are provided for us to sit down.
I imagine the tour can also be offered in English and Spanish, but this issue should be agreed directly with Egon.
The payment was made by PIX just before we met in Cambará. The activity depends on weather factors and we did not discuss the possibility of refunds or how these would be made if necessary. If important to your group, I suggest defining this issue in advance with Egon himself.
We got back to Cambará around 23:00, because we encouraged Egon to cover some extra points. No food will be offered during the tour. I suggest you take food and don't forget something hot, like a mate! In the city, restaurants may be closed at your return time. Be prepared for this. The restaurants we know during our visit to Cambara do not follow a specific time and are guided by movement - do not depend solely on the time set by the establishment on Google!
We did the activity during the summer and the temperature reached about 14oC. Depending on the time of year, be prepared for more intense cold. If necessary, carry blankets.
For who isn't it?
I imagine that people who have an extreme aversion to being photographed or who, for whatever reason, believe that discussing the universe, from a scientific or mythological point of view, is taboo, may not enjoy the experience as a whole.
Despite having a definite structure, the activity changes throughout the year as the sky also changes throughout the year. It is advisable to ask Egon directly what are the best months to observe specific phenomena of your interest.
I summarized here our experience associated with everything that Egon was warning us during conversations over several weeks. Egon structures its service with the quality of a tourism company, cherishing for well-defined processes and caring for the customer experience. I recommend the closed-eyed tour for couples and groups of friends, as in my case.
Our experience in Cambará do Sul was, as a whole, splendid. The astronomical tour exceeded our expectations by helping us, looking out, to see within ourselves. We leave the experience with the certainty that it does not leave to be desired for any tour offered in the Southern Hemisphere - as well as that Egon is, without a doubt, one of the best astronomical guides on the planet.

Egon is amazing! He loves what he does and does very well. The experience was unforgettable. The night was starry and with the new moon, it was possible to see a huge amount of stars.
We learned about constellations (and their stories from ancient times), astronomy, with details I did not know, we saw many falling stars (it seemed like there was an unusual meteor rain), we laughed a lot and, as a toast, we took great photos.
The tour is connected by a storytelling that engages in a fun way and with a lot of learning. Must be among the best astronomical Tours in the world.
We learned about constellations (and their stories from ancient times), astronomy, with details I did not know, we saw many falling stars (it seemed like there was an unusual meteor rain), we laughed a lot and, as a toast, we took great photos.
The tour is connected by a storytelling that engages in a fun way and with a lot of learning. Must be among the best astronomical Tours in the world.

Me and my girlfriend did the astronomical tour with Egon, and it was simply unforgettable! His storytelling transformed each constellation and star into fascinating stories – we saw the Milky Way, Venus, Jupiter and even falling stars. Egon not only dominates the technical part, and takes wonderful photos, but also creates an amazing connection with the group. It was a special moment that we will take forever, and I recommend everyone to visit Cambará do Sul and the region.

Incredible experience. Egon has excellent storytelling and is a class on astronomy, history and life. Impermissible. Memorable. We will never forget! The pictures are so surreal that we have no way to describe.

I met Egon tour by my mother, who warned me that the same recommends not to take young because it can be boring, however, this astronomical tour was the best program during my stay in South Cambara, his skills of "storytelling" remind me of those of my grandfather, who I hope to come to enjoy this incredible experience, Egon is a very nice person and prepared, in addition to being a great photographer.
My favorite part was being able to see the space station passing through the sky.
I hope more people discover this tour and have the same amazement of coming back to the hostel wondering about the aliens!

This tour is IMPERDIBLE! EGON in addition to being an excellent photographer, and a wonderful storytelling (tells us the story of stars, comets, constellations besides legends and curiosities).
Egon is an amazing person and an excellent photographer, including award-winning by NASA. It was an amazing and unforgettable program!

The astronomical tour with the Egon was a spectacular experience... and look, I've never been interested in astronomy before! An impeccable storytelling!

We went to Cambará especially for this tour, and we were not disappointed. Egon delivers a complete experience, starting in the central square of Cambará and following by car to a more remote place, with a walk to a spectacular view of the highlands of the Serra, the observation of the sunset, with the right to classes on various topics related to astronomy and others, all with a solid foundation of scientific knowledge. But Egon’s specialty are the spectacular and personalized photos, which will surely have value for us for the rest of our lives. All we have to do is thank you!

We loved the walk! The Egon guide is quite charismatic and has excellent storytelling, which combined with the location that allows to see the sky in a unique way, turns this tour into an unforgettable night. I highly recommend!

O Tour Astronômico precisa realmente de boa meteorologia para acontecer, ou seja, céu aberto e com poucas/nenhuma nuvem. Não temos como fazer uma previsão com muita antecedência, mas acompanhamos diariamente o seu desenvolvimento. Com o céu aberto, a visão das estrelas/planetas/via-lactea aqui em Cambará do Sul é sensacional. 😊

Olá Juliet, a idade mínima para participar é 16 anos. É um programa de adultos onde falamos de Astronomia, mitologia, história do planeta terra e possibilidades de vida fora do nosso planeta. A experiência tem mostrado que pequenos não tem paciência (o que é normal) para ficar 4h no campo prestando atenção nestas abordagens. Mil desculpas. 🙏

Olá Peter, o sensor da câmera capta mais detalhes do que o olho humano em situações de pouca luz. Mas aqui em Cambará do Sul estamos situados em área de pouquíssima poluição luminosa - entre nível 1 e 2 da escala de Bortle, o que significa que é possível enxergar a olho nu algo como 6.000 estrelas. A via-láctea é, sim, visível a olho nu e é espetacular. 🖖
