Myself and two of my family members took your ferry to St. Croix from St. Thomas on Friday, Feb4 and returned on Sunday, February 6. I have several very important safety concerns about our return trip:
-Should the ferry have even been running on such a choppy ocean? The boat rocked and tipped terribly and we had to hang on tightly throughout the trip.
-Should the captain have been going so fast with the conditions? We bounced out of our seats many times and hurt our necks and backs.
-Should passengers have been allowed to sit on the top deck in the conditions? My daughter and three other people went above and were told they may get a little wet by a crew member. Five minutes into the trip they were being thrown out of their seats and drenched with ocean water. One man and my daughter made it to the stairs by crawling to the back deck of the boat, the door was latched or stuck and no one answered their pounding knocks. They sat out on the back being drenched and holding on during capsizing waves. Two other women couldn’t make it down and hid behind the life jacket box on the upper deck. After another 20 minutes someone came to the door and let my daughter and the man inside the latched door. My daughter was sick from swallowing so much ocean water and made it to a back seat to sit with the man that had helped her. She had blisters on her hands that show how hard she was hanging in to the ferry. Her mask was blown off during the ordeal and all the crew member did was yell at her that she didn’t have a mask on!!

Meanwhile below deck, about 20 minutes into the trip, I asked a crew member that was sitting in front of me if anyone was checking on the people on the top deck. He assured me that the captain and crew could see them. I am horrified now to know that this was not true. My niece and I continued to bounce around worrying about my daughter while the crew screamed, laughed, cursed and seemed to be having a grand time on the rough ocean while passengers were fighting for their lives and scared. We heard all of this because we were sitting up front by the crew cabin.

Another 30 minutes went by and two crew members came to ask about my daughter being on the top deck. I said the last I knew, she was up there. They looked worried and asked me to look back at the crowd where I finally spotted her! You can imagine my relief! I am so thankful for the man that assisted her during this ordeal but I am disgusted and angry with your crew. There were 6-7 crew members in the cabin partying while the passengers were left to fend for themselves. A few of the crew members come out and looked around the bottom deck periodically.

On a side note, I don’t know how the crew even knew how many people were on the boat because no one checked tickets on this return trip. We did have to check in at St. Thomas and turn in paper tickets to the crew before boarding. None of this was done at St Croix.

Also, no safety rules or a talk of any kind was given before we left the harbor like on every other watercraft I’ve been a passenger on throughout the world. How would we find life jackets or get out of the ship if we were locked in? We saw a sign that said they were located in a box but did not see a box.

The USVI Coast Guard has been made aware of this dangerous situation.

Worst ride of my life and I have been on several boats and ferries all over the country and world. I was on top and a crew member told me and the others up top “You may get a little wet”- before we knew it capsizing waves were coming over the boat - no help, no safety briefing before the ride. We had to crawl while slipping all over to get to the stairs and down to the back of the boat. The door was locked to the cabin and we couldn’t get in for close to a half hour while holding on and getting drenched- no idea if we’d ever get back in- knocking on door. Finally when we got in, I was sick and drenched and the only thing they could ask was about my mask which flew off in the ocean. Rude and incompetent crew - zero regard for safety. Don’t do it - trust me.

Incompetent, indifferent, rude crew left people on top deck to fend for themselves in bad weather. Hatch was locked or stuck and no one answered cries for help. Very scary and dangerous situation!
Tickets were not checked or collected so the crew did not even know how many people were on the ferry.
I emailed the company with my concerns but did not get a reply.
