What a delightful experience this was. Never been on a museum visit like it. We had a tour conducted personally by owner Jan who is super nice and full of stories to really give a flavour of what it was like to be a whaler.

And the gardens - just gorgeous and you get to have a private picnic opportunity in them (bring it with you).

We would have visited just for the gardens so the combination is a great experience.

Absolutely fabulous, so thankful for the Ferguson family to have retained this amazing look into early New Zealand history, especially the massive world wide whaling industry, Jan gives a very good commentary of the museum, the old home and not least the wonderful extensive gardens .Don't forget to take a picnic as the walks on Butler Point are spectacular and 2-3 hours is easily spent. Well worth every cent of the entry cost.

This was an excellent two hours and a really worthwhile experience. Jan, our guide and owner of the museum, was an excellent guide and it became clear as the tour continued, that she and her family have made the restoration of Butler's homestead in Hihi their labour of love.
The talk on the life of a 19th century whaler was fascinating and the museum has done it's utmost to recreate those times along with Butler's original home. This is the past brought to life and history is all the better for it. One of the highlights of my trip. Thank you so much!

The Butler Point Whaling Museum was a highlight of our 5 days in the Far North. We drove out there only to find out that you have to book because it is a guided tour that takes around 2 hours. It is a privately run museum which deserves support as it is a fascinating insight into whaling and the economy of this area pre-1840. It also has a beautiful garden that is part of the tour. Our guide, Lizzie, had an extensive knowledge of whaling and the area’s history. Recommend this as a must do if you are in the Mangonui/Doubtless Bay area.

Spent a glorious week in the Far North, NZ in Doubtless Bay, specifically Hihi Beach. It's a fantastic region to explore but a definite highlight was The Whaling Museum. Packed full of incredible information, original whaling small boats, paddles, spears and whaling curios in a well maintained and informative museum. With a super knowlegable guide (Lizzy) we toured the gardens and original Butler House, watched a silent 100yo short movie on some of the history of whaling from Nantuckett to NZ and generally found it all incredibly fascinating. My sister and I really enjoyed the two hours gliding through the lush native forest, birdlife, cemetary and original maori pah. Highly recommended ... $30 for 2+ hours of history. Don't miss it.

A lovely tour guide, full of information about an impressive collection and an historic home.
There is the added bonus of Lovely gardens to wander afterwards at your leisure.
Very good value and highly recommended if you have an interest in NZs whaling and early settler history.

A high quality small museum with excellent guide (Jan). Basically, everything you'd want to know about whaling in NZ and generally. Well worth a visit.

You need to phone to make a booking for the tour. Takes about one and a half hours. The guide was brilliant. We all learnt so much about NZ history of this time.

The environment is beautiful, set in privately owned park like grounds. They have the biggest Pohutukawa tree alive . The Butler cottage is well preserved and presented. The whaling museum and the guided tour are interesting. Unfortunately I can't remember our guide's name but she was knowledgeable, enthusiastic and friendly. We thoroughly enjoyed our time here.
