We visited this Visitor Center first during our exploration of Voyageurs National Park. It is located on the south share, eastern side, of Lake Kabetogama, and in a historical log cabin. It only had a few small displays, but there were National Park passport stamps available, as well as different souvenirs and merchandise for sale. We were also able to grab a map, and there are large bathrooms in a separate building nearby. There was also plenty of parking where we could leave our car while we hiked nearby. This was by far the best area of the park in terms of access to hiking trails; we tried and enjoyed several nearby - the Blind Ash Bay Trail was our favorite, but the Beaver Pond Overlook was also a nice short walk to a pretty location.

This VC is one of 3 in the park but it is only opened during the summer. While not the main one, I think it is the best for the features around it. It is here at Ash River that you can catch the boat to Kettle Falls, participate in a North Canoe Experience and hike the best trails in the park, Blind Ash Bay Trail, Kabetogama Overlook Trail and Beaver Pond Overlook Trail. I also thought it had the best merchandise. It is also the most historical as a true log cabin. Anyways for a variety of reason you should stop here, probably a good reason it is the Number 2 attraction.

Easy to get to, quiet, even if you don't want to go across the water in the main park. Visited in May, great weather.

We enjoy the center but we’re privileged to have friends that took us on a boat ride on the Ash River. Got the close view of the falls, then tooled around a couple of the adjacent lakes. Great day!

Tiny little Visitor Center with big heart! Our visit with the couple who staffs the center made it our favorite stop yet. The view of the water from behind the building is really nice, & the proximity to a few of the parks shorter trails make this Visitor Center a must-do, in my opinion.

The Ash River Visitor Center is small, but beautiful and interesting. There is a homey cabin area, a film, a shop, and a ranger to answer questions. Ample parking lot and boat launch

Not very busy with people, able to walk around and read things at own pace. Historic building where you could imagine what life was like long ago. Breath taking views. Friendly and knowledgeable staff.

The Ash River Visitor Center is probably the least visited of the three Voyageur National Park Visitor Centers. It is the furthest south and the farthest from population centers and main roads. It was a relatively small log structure with no formal museum area and only a small gift shop. The main room in the back is beautiful. Be sure to spend some time here relaxing and viewing the two video presentations in the small adjacent room. There are also a few displays to study. This center makes you feel like you are in the north woods. The ranger is friendly, knowledgeable, and makes you feel at home here. We visited on a rainy day and he was about to start a fire in the fireplace. This center is located on a hill and if you exit the back door, you will find some Adirondack chairs with a lovely view of the water. This may not be the biggest visitor center, but it was my favorite.

This is a 5 out of 5 if not for the Blind Ash Bay Trail being plagued with mosquitoes, bees, flies. The Park Ranger at the Visitor Center did caution us to bring bug spray for our hike.
It wasn’t easy for us to find the trail head with the map and directions given by the Park Ranger. Perhaps, it’s us not having gotten our bearings swiftly.
Water and a hat or fan to deter bugs are both essential! Hiking boots are advisable when the trail has muddy or rain saturated portions.
The picnic bench by pine trees right by the flag on the rock is perfect for viewing Lake Kabetogama, listening to the relaxing sound of gentle waves kissing the rocks and dipping our feet in the river’s water.
The red chairs on the back of the visitor center are also a nice perch to relax.
There is no food here but Jim’s Ash Trail Store and gas station isn’t far. It is well stocked, clean and beautiful with sandwiches, hot dogs, corn dogs, ice cream, tons of drink choices and snacks.
We had a lovely day and learned that retirees may apply for seasonal National Park jobs. Applicants receive a two-week training and are assigned to a Park of their preference.

Because of generational flooding - there was limited access but there are more trails that you can access by car in spite of the flooding at this visitors center than any of the other ones
