Friday 17th January this was another of the attractions that we visited on our all day Jamboulay Tour of the island.
Our bus pulled up outside this Museum which is located along Diamond Street in Victoria.
The aim of the Museum is to preserve the Island's nutmeg culture. We learnt that, surprisingly, Grenada is World's second highest producer of nutmeg and a major contributor to the Island's economy.
We were met at the entrance by a Guide who led us around the Museum explaining the process. It starts when the ripe nuts are delivered to the factory by the farmer.
The nutmeg and mace were separated then the nuts are air dried for six to eight weeks, while the mace is sun-dried.
Once dried the nuts are taken to the manual cracking and extraction section.
We were walked around the remaining stages up to bagging and dispatching.
As we walked around we were shown the processes, tools and implements used in the production of nutmeg.
At the end of the guided tour we ended up in a small sales are where we could purchase goods make with nutmeg including cakes, sausages, sauces, beverages and ice cream.

A small museum to nutmeg on Grenada. Cheap to get in and the tour guide (Tray) was exceptionally knowledgeable. The personal tour lasted about 20 minutes and then we bought a few products which they sell at very reasonable prices. I am sure some will say that it is too small, not professional and so on, it’s Grenada, this is their industry and I think it is worth supporting. An added bonus will be the local nutmeg when I get home!

This is an interesting museum where you can learn all about nutmeg. Grenada is the world's second largest producer of nutmeg.

Worth seeing but try to go on a day when there aren't too many day trippers from cruise ships on the island. We are independent travellers and were tagged onto a tour from a cruise ship, there were too many people to see things or hear the guide properly.

We were at Nutmeg world.
We had a guide that explained how they make nutmeg.
The ones who work on the nutmeg work always by hand. They can feel which is good or not.
They have to dry the nutmeg.
I like the moto: Workers! Bring God's peace inside and leave the devil's noise outside.
We were able to taste it and it was delicious.
They had nutmeg on sale and we bought some of it. So delicious!
Worthwhile to try!

There used to be two processing stations in Grenada; one in Grenville that no longer offers tours of the facility and this one in Gouyave that for $1 USD per person you can still get a pretty nice informational tour.
It's a fairly small area to walk through but it makes up in the info and the character - do not get discouraged by the look of the building as it appears like an abandoned haunted house :) from the outside but inside is perfectly functioning nut meg facility. To visit Grenada and not go to a nutmeg plant (they are 2nd biggest nutmeg exporter after Indonesia and after all have nutmeg in their flag) is a crime :)
TIP: there is no parking other than street area which tends to get busy so be patient and careful as it's a pretty busy area right by the gas station
TIP: the nutmeg spray is a pretty decent painkiller and I have been using their spray since we visited and I do enjoy it, takes some getting use to the smell though :) (it's $12 USD cash only which ironically all over the island is the same - including GND airport)

One of a number of places we visited on our 2 week stay on the island.
Quite well and long established we found the subject interesting.
Our stay was aprox. 20-30 minutes and educational if a little dusty!
Dont drive past but stop for a short stay ,look and purchase from the real people.

Enjoyed seeing how one of our favourite spices is processed and readied for market. Our guide was friendly and the hardworking ladies at the sorting station graciously let us take photos while they worked. Have a new appreciation for this spice and it’s origins.

Junior Cuffie is a fantastic guide, interesting and pleasant. Knowledgable about the history of the island (and others nearby), he’s also a wealth of information about nature and the environment. Riding with Junior you feel as if you have a well-informed friend in Grenada.

Short tour, great value for your low entrance fee, and very interesting to see how nutmeg is collected, graded and processed (all by hand), and then packaged for shipping all over the world.
There is a small shop as well that has every imaginable form of nutmeg powder, sauce, jam, jelly, syrup, oil, that you could ever want, at good prices.
