Our visit to Grey Roots was an incredibly enjoyable experience. The grounds are well-kept, the buildings and displays laid out well. But most of all, we were impressed by the enthusiastic, knowledgeable volunteers we met inside these buildings! Fabulous! Although we know the area well and have visited several pioneer villages/museums, we learned a lot about the Indigenous residents and settlers, and their struggles to live on the Bruce Peninsula. We also learned about the impact of various technological advancements. So glad we went!

Today was "Spring into Moreston". What a wonderful kids' event.
Visited with 3 Ukranian children from Owen Sound. 10, 7 and 3 years old.
Everything was an adventure.
We came ealy and had time to visit the indoor exhibition. Played Donkey Kong. Admired the huge slice of the tree. Talked about the nine grandfathers, pictured in the Totem pole.
Later we fed the alpacas with dandelion. Checked out the old school house. The tractors, cars, and the train.
The crafts, especially the wooden cars, were awesome. A Native lady from cape Croker showed different kinds of animal poop. The bird show was stunning. Thank you for all of that!

It was Archives Awareness Week when we visited Grey Roots. It has a huge parking lot and is a very sizeable building with large capacity in their washrooms. This place has ambition!
And they match their ambitions with a large museum space with a large set of artifacts, some of which are explained in text and some of which you have to dial into rotary telephones to hear their stories - which was really cute. You can really get a sense of the 200 years of history in the county and surrounding area.
And that is BEFORE you get to the print room, which is crowded with all sorts of old presses, types, and even a huge linotype machine, which I had heard about but never seen. This is not easy to find, but seek it out. And near the print room is a huge collection of old furniture which is not well displayed but which you can glimpse.
And they have a gift shop with some local treasures and a lot of stuffed animals that are very cute.
We didn't go to the archives, because I didn't have any research to do.
I've been to a lot of local county museums in Ontario. This one is first-rate and a credit to their community. And it isn't far from Inglis Falls.

Thoroughly enjoyed the outside village; even having visited many pioneer villages and historic properties, this one was interesting and very well kept. Artifacts are accessible. Staff is very knowledgeable and willing to chat. Sign boards with additional information and suggested activities for children. Not overcrowded; indeed, not at all crowded. Indoor and outdoor exhibits. Not expensive and very worthwhile.

I liked the archives especially. Archivist was obviously very passionate about her work and knowledgeable about what was on hand. The museum proper has a few exhibits focused mostly on local history but they, like the building, are definitely very modern and informative.

The Grey Roots Museum was a great place to visit. The exhibits were informative and varied. The staff were friendly and engaged. Numerous children were there on their March Break. They were all having fun with a variety of activities.
We also viewed some of the special collections and archives. The team were most helpful as we did some family research.
It was surprising to find such a well curated facilities in such a small community.
