Brilliant place to visit, you can climb the tower to view Chester from above. Walking the short part of the walls, on a beautiful day (which it was) sitting on the terrace in the sun was such joy. The most amazing part was the three guides we met who had so much enthusiasm for the history of the castle, ensuring we enjoyed every moment. No charge is made to enter, but make sure to check it is open . Advised when all volunteers available they hope to open Saturday and Sunday through most of the year. They have Halloween and Christmas events planned. Thankyou for a great visit.

The castle was built in 1070 but is mostly in ruins now. The best view was from the Wall Walk, in my opinion. The mere thought that the remains of the mighty walls of the 11th century castle are still there is fascinating. The entrance is free.

Definately one to avoid unless you have a really special interest in old ruins or Chester history. Assumed wrongly that it would be just a little bit interactive at the very least, we were able to catch a glimpse from the walls and another through some fenced in scrubland. The walls were a good walk albeit very slippery in parts, I personally regret wasting my time and money travelling here.

We visited Chester Castle during a Heritage Weekend, when there were a variety of Living History displays through the ages. There was a range of skills and activities demonstrated, but the most fascinating part for me was the Agricola Tower and chapel of St Mary de Castro.
The guide was extremely knowledgeable and pointed out the magnificent medieval wall paintings that are slowly emerging through previous restoration attempts. The detail that can be seen is amazing, considering how old they are. Definitely worth the climb up the somewhat precarious steps!

This is a free attraction and looked after by English Heritage. You can only enter the Agricola Tower and go to the rooftop with lovely views. You can walk around the walkway. It is now open weekends 11am -3pm april to october.

Full of History and Heritage.
Visited here for the first time at the weekend with Reenactment. Full of rich history.
From 1070 - 2023 this site remains an impressive structure.
Will definitely Visit again.

We were very disappointed to find that Chester Castle, which stands on a small hill in the southwest corner of the city walls, is only open during special events. As a result, all we were able to see of the once great medieval castle is that part which is visible from the walkway on the city walls. Fortunately, there is an information board on the walkway which gives some information.

Closed when we visited and only available with a booked guided tour. I would question if this is warranted based on the size of the castle. Unless you are especially keen (or you discover ahead of time it’s actually open) I would say just grab a look from the city walls as you pass.
