The trail is amazing, although from clearbrook to tavistock the trail diverges off the original railway alignment, why is that, the route looks unblocked from clearbrook to horrabridge on the original track bed, it would make less hassle of diversions and would make use of the original alignment.

Great cycle trail linking Coypool / Plymbridge / Clearbrook / Yelverton and Tavistock.
This is a shared path with walkers, please cycle sensibly - be careful of walkers, dogs not on leads, children walking or on bikes.
Free parking at Coypool Park & Ride for a longer walk via Plymbridge (1 mile longer one way) or free parking at Plymbridge and a shorter walk.
Free British Cycling event, Clearbrook Village Hall, midday Saturday 08April2023.

The Great Western Railway opened its Broad Gauge branch line from Plymouth to Launceston via Tavistock in 1859. The lossmaking route closed completely 103 years later, during a ferocious blizzard, on 31st December 1962.
The southernmost ten miles of the trackbed, running, from Marsh Mills to Tavistock, has been surfaced with tarmac for walkers and cyclists and now form part of National Cyle Network Route 27 and the Devon Coast-to-Coast Ride.
At Coypool, adjacent to the Plymouth road 'bus Park and Ride terminus, pedal cycles may be hired and refreshments obtained. For the first 1 1/2 miles the cycle trail follows the track of the Plym Valley Heritage Railway, from Marsh Mills Station to Plym Valley Platform. Here the rails end abruptly and the tarmac begins. The cycle trail climbs quite steeply (in railway terms) as it heads north through beautiful deciduous woodland, crossing tributaries of the River Plym by means of three impressive masonry arch viaducts.
On the return journey, which is downhill, there is hardly any need to pedal and high speeds can easily be reached. Beware, therefore, of children and dogs which are off their leads and roaming freely! Also in Autumn the tarmac surface can get muddy and a carpet of damp leaves is by no means the ideal surface upon which to perform an emergency stop.
It's ironic that nowadays more people use the Plymouth to Tavistock railway line as cyclists or walkers than ever they did as passengers in the slow, dirty, expensive and infrequent steam trains which once served this route!

I rode my bike along here for the first time with a group of friends starting at Marsh Mills and heading to Dartmoor before a stop off and return.

I’d advise this is suitable for any level of rider as it’s mainly flat with the smallest incline gradually up to Dartmoor. You could walk it but I’d advise cycling as you’ll cover more distance and see more.

Be wary of dog walkers as you’ll encounter plenty off the lead, particularly around the Plymbridge woods area and no matter how disciplined their owners claim they are, some did run in front of me last second.

Again, if you’re going with young kids, it’s perfectly fine, just give them a little brief to stick to the left and use their bell as there are skilled riders who use the trail and they flew past me without me knowing they were there and I’m not slow in pace myself.

Very busy (but manageable) with a steady flow of cyclists of all ages most in small groups, some with smallish children and or dogs. Very attractive run up from Coypool along a well maintained trail on the old railway track up as far as Goodameavy and beyond.

A steady climb at railway gradient. Some parts demand care in giving way to walkers, dogs and toddlers on new bikes. Speed can be excessive down hill, and dangerous. Largely tarmacced path surface but mud guards are needed in the winter months. Sunny spring days are magnificent when foliage is fresh. A most satisfying ride.

Often cycle Route 27 between Plymouth (including Saltram Estate) and Tavistock, going off route into woodland trails. To be avoided on school holiday afternoons, and watch out for the dogs off lead.

Holiday planned for a week in Devon. Contact with family in Plympton who suggested a cycle one Saturday afternoon. As I cycle at home I was up for a cycle. Borrowing a bike from a family member we set off. I loved every minute of it. The scenery was lovely and we had some young cyclist too. They managed the round trip with not too much whinging. We ended up doing 19 miles in the end.

gentle incline on way out as is an old railway but well worth it as barely noticeable till you dont have to pedal much on the way back. the Sistrans cycle route has some steep sections in the middle but these can be bypassed by going along the flatter path from where it doubles back,, is a nice trail with enough variation to be good. there are some other routes for the more adventurous both on road and more off piste. traffic free but advise buying a drink from either end as not alot else on way if the coffe van isnt in Plymbridge carpark{(if it is definately stop for coffee and / or icecream!!)}

As part of our cycle tour from Barnstable to Plymouth we used the Plym Valley Cycle trail. Some wonderful scenery, a great trail, safe and traffic free, we would recommend it to anyone wanting to get some exercise and enjoyment of the outdoors.
