Barrio: Trafalgar Square/Embankment

Former London police stations are to be found in the most unlikely of locations from Marble Arch to the interior of this ornamental light fitting in the south-east corner of Trafalgar Square. It was built in 1926 so that up to two police officers could spy on potential danger and subversion amongst demonstrators in the square. Alternatively it could house up to two prisoners. Today it stores brooms for the use of Westminster Council cleaners in the event of leaky pigeons.

I have visited Trafalgar Square a number of times and I never realised that this was a police station. You can look inside but there is very little in it. If more than one person were to go in there it would be a tight squeeze!
It's located on the edge of Trafalgar Square and you can get there by walking from the riverside, Leicester Square, Westminster or Buckingham Palace.
It's a quirky little oddity and if you like unusual things you may want to track it down.

Aim was to see some of the more quirkier/ unusual sights on our recent trip to London. This didn’t disappoint. Smallest police station built in to a street lamp in the south east corner of Trafalgar Square.
Can’t imagine how many times we have walked right past this before.
Highly recommended.

Fascinating, it has to be seen to be believed. If you are at Trafalgar Square, at it to the list. The smallest Police Station - hard to believe that is what it was.

This police station was apparently built onto one of Trafalgar Square’s lamp posts in the 1920s so that protestors could be watched. The police must have been thin, because it really is absolutely tiny. It’s no longer used as a police station, but it’s a wonderful curiosity.

One day I hope to see this open! This tiny police station is in a corner of Trafalgar Square. Not sure you could fit more than 2 officers in there!

Just fun to see this smallest police station and to be at Trafalgar square. Station was locked. Nobody there.

The smallest police station in the UK (if not all of Europe) is located in the very heart of Trafalgar Square. Installed in an old lampost in the 1920s to keep an eye on protesters. It is no longer actively used as a Police station of course but is a rather interesting sight to see when you’re out and about in Trafalgar Square. Today the station has been converted into a broom cupboard! That being said, you can still peek in the windows while passing on the way to the National Gallery…

In the southeast corner of Trafalgar Square, unnoticed by most visitors, is what many have called the world's smallest police station. The Lilliputian Police Station was built in the 1930s to serve as a watch-post, an eye on Trafalgar Square, which is a magnet for London’s protesters, rioters, marchers, and pigeons. Inside, there is only room for a single person.
These days it is used as a storage room by the cleaners.

Its not at all what you expect, its not like a tardis or a proper bobbies home. I guess when it was operational it was a place to relax for a while. Nothing to do with today's Coppers.
