A little hard to find but a lot worth it. Fabulously restoration work and protection in the site. The cross is amazing and the entire site is really nice too. Very little parking by the green gate.

This was literally the last thing we did in Ireland and it was a wonderful way to end the trip. The sun was quickly setting and we stopped here on the way back to our hotel. Wandering into the little old churchyard that was tucked off the road was an adventure in and of itself. The cross itself was beautiful (one of the best I saw in Ireland) and looked haunting in the twilight.

Authentic pub. Drinks only. The owner and his son are amazing people. Worth the stop. Fun place to visit for sure. Clean and safe.

This beautiful high cross is seemingly in the middle of nowhere, and you enter through a small opening in the stone wall, walk up a short path, and then this incredible carved cross is there. We didn't see any other visitors during our visit. Definitely worth a stop!

We stopped here on our way to Kilkenny from Glendalough Monastic Site. It was a great place to get out and stretch the legs. There was no parking lot that we saw but there was a slot on the road that we used as as parking spot. It didn't really look like we were supposed to be there because the doors weren't open and the gate was chained. But it was chained in such away that we were able to climb through. As soon as we climbed through the skies open up and we scrambled to find cover. We were rewarded with a beautiful tree covered path that led to an alcove within a stone wall.
The rain let up so we continued down the path and there she was. It was so beautiful. Very well kept and awesome descriptions on the placards.
This is worth the visit. It is free and informative.

The effort to reach this site was worthwhile. So poorly signposted that we wondered if somehow we might be in the wrong area but eventually GPS worked. We passed by in each direction a few times until we decided to investigate a narrow gap in a wall and then follow the path along the old church wall, and there it was. Impressive, we understand its maybe 1,200 years old. Now restored and protected by a glass awning over, its truly a wonderful sculpture. There are information boards around the perimeter that give comprehensive information on the cross and the carved reliefs. Part of a second cross stands nearby and its also worthwhile having a look at the old gravestones.

The High Cross at Moone is an amazing piece of craftsmanship. It is one of the two highest stone crosses in Ireland and is an amazing thing to find tucked away in such an isolated rural setting.
There are display boards inside the abbey church where the cross is housed that explain the engravings on each face of the cross and the edges from the twelve apostles at its base, the resurrection above them and the likes of deer, cows, dogs and Celtic spirals as you ascend this magnificent structure. Nobody is certain but it is probable that te cross, carved from granite, was made in the 9th century.
It's is housed in the open air in the ruined abbey but there is an awning build overhead to shelter the cross from the elements- and to shelter you too if you are here in bad weather!
It's us very hard to find. Initially I just drove to the town of Moone. You're still a long way away! Then I put it into satnav and it took me to the High Cross Pub! Still miles away!
From the pub you keep travelling along the road and take the first right. Keep going about 5 minutes (by car- not on foot!) till a T junction facing the gates to a rather stately home. Go left there and the High across is about 100m on the right. You have a small layby to park the car but no actual car park. You must climb through a gap in the wall to enter and walk along a short gravelled path.
It's free to enter, there is no ticket office or visitors centre though there is a toilet.
An absolutely incredible piece of work. If it was in a city often it would get hundreds and hundreds of thousands of visitors. A gem and a must see.

This is the tallest High Cross in Ireland with remarkably detailed images which are explained on accompanying panels. It is off the beaten track, but well worth finding.

This is a great experience finding your way along the winding roads and beautiful rolling hills of Kildare to get to Moone. It really is a joy to behold - so much detail. Even though it's great that they have moved the cross into the church and given it some protection - it would be nice to have a better idea of where it would have stood and how it worked and looked in practice.
