This life sized bronze statue is located along
Selskar Street in the heart of Wexford Town.
It pays hommage to one of the Town's favourite sons, Nicholas (Nickey) Rackard.
He was born on the 28th October 1922 in Killann, County Wexford and died in Dublin on 10th April 1976, nearly 54.
He was a renowned hurler with a long career playing for the Wexford senior team from 1940 to 1957, seventeen years.
During his career he created numerous scoring records including being the top championship goal-scorer with 59 goals, which still stands today.
Despite his high scoring he only won one Leinster tile and no All Ireland titles.
The sculpture depicts Rackard, dressed in his hurling kit, with a caman (hurling stick) in one hand and the slithor (hurling ball) in the other. He looks poised to take a shot at at scoring another goal.
It stands on a granite base with his name, Nickey Rackard engraved on the front of it.

A well deserved statue of Nicky Rackard, who being from Wexford is known for being one of the best hurlers. Well worth a quick walk over to see the statue

If you don’t know about hurling this will mean nothing. It’s a fascinating story best delivered by a local guide. The statue is unusual as he’s on one foot only. He was the hurling hero of the 1950s and from Wexford.

A fitting tribute to a great Wexford hurler and footballer who's fame and hurling ability was recognised far beyond his native county.

The Nicky Rackard Commemorative Statue is well worth a visit, perhaps Wexford's most famous sporting son in typical all action pose, sliotar in one hand, hurley in the other. It is just off Main Street in Wexford near Selskar Abbey.
For those who don't know, he is considered one of the greatest hurlers of all time, is the leading championship goalscorer of all time with 59 and won two all-Ireland hurling titles with Wexford.
I am too young to remember him in his pomp as he represented Wexford between 1942-1957, but anyone growing up in Ireland would have seen countless hours of footage of this fearless warrior and heard lots of stories handed down from those lucky enough to see him play.
He died in 1976 and this distinctive statue is a fitting memorial to the man. As a tourist it makes for a great photo, as a hurling fan its a chance to put yourself in mind of greatness.
