Seeing this garden thrive and flourish over time is wonderful! This was my fourth visit since I came to live in the area and as usual it was a treat to look forward to. It's tranquil, and yet full of colour and interest. There are moments of excitement, moments when you are knocked out of the tranquillity, when the colours just jar a bit, which is as it should be. Christopher Lloyd liked magenta and orange together, and he was so right. Don't send me to sleep, he said once. Too much peacefulness in a garden can be a bit tedious. The hard surface areas are very well thought out. That, and pruning and clipping are the two components in any garden which frame the planting, the flowers and the grasses. The terrace - where you can sit and eat, cake and coffee, or pizzas and sandwiches (best pizza I've ever eaten in Spain) - looks down on another seating area with a lovely planting of lavenders and other hot/dry loving shrubby plants, and to one side a series of semi circular stone steps then leads you up and into the garden. I like the sense of containment, little 'garden rooms' leading one into the other. The generous planting gives a sense of stuff spilling over and out, yet it's well held by clipped hedges and the overall form and order. There's a really good balance of containment and exuberance. When I go back to the UK I stay with my sister and she takes me to her 'local', just down the road, Beth Chatto's famous garden. I will be proud to bring my sister to my 'local', Robert and William's lovely, generous, sprawling, contained - and LOVED garden!

Not so easy to find but well worth the effort. Be careful as the sign on the main road is small and parking in the gardens is tight.
We were delighted with our visit - Robert and William have been developing these gardens for 12 years.
Not large but very, very interesting- with amazing views.
Obvious from design- that colour coordination is important.
Veggy patch hugely impressive- given poor soil quality and temperatures that can vary by 50 degrees. Also they have water supply challenges but seem to cope admirably.
We will definitely be back.
Worth also staying for coffee and a light bite. Well done sirs- you can be proud of what you have achieved in a challenging but beautiful location.
We purchased some Irises and hope they will do well for us.

Thank you for finding us, the local town hall have promised to give us a bigger sign. It was a pleasure to meet you and we hope the iris thrives in your climate.

You don’t need to be a chef to enjoy this event I would highly recommend the wood fired oven cookery course for a very relaxed day with excellent hosts who describe how the oven is built, how you use and cook in it. You get to prepare and cook your own food and then eat it in a most splendid place with wonderful views over the mountains with a glass or two of beer, Vino or lemonade which ever takes your fancy

We visited this garden on our organised tour of the Alpujarras. What a gorgeous place run by two Englishmen Robert and William who could not have made us more welcome. We wandered round the garden which has a wonderful relaxing feeling especially in the gorgeous sunshine we enjoyed. After our tour we had cakes and refreshments on their terrace with its spectacular views.
They also have accommodation on site which would be a great place to stay if you were walking in the area.
Check their website for days they are open to the public.

What a magical place this is. A horticultural gem set in the mountains created and run by two of the friendliest people you could wish to meet. Robert and William made our group feel extremely welcome. We were blessed with wonderful weather in which to appreciate their showstopping garden. The cake and drinks taken under their canopy with spectacular views were most welcome and rounded off our visit beautifully.
Don't miss this garden, it's a wonderful treat.

It's a three hour round journey for us to visit Jardin de la Alpujarra and it is always worth every minute of our time. The Friday food is fantastic, plentiful, tasty and so well presented. We've eaten so much fresh produce that has been grown in the glorious gardens that have been so patiently created by Robert and William over many years in this picturesque part of Andalucia.
We've savoured home grown rhubarb, tomatoes, peppers, asparagus, spuds, strawberries, raspberries, blackcurrants, beans, various herbs, including basil complimenting home made ice cream - all of which have been served with fine dishes that would satisfy those with a normal and healthy appetite.
This is not a restaurant. This is not a fast food outlet or a place selling fatty and fat inducing processed meats which are all too readily on offer in bars and restaurants in some areas of Spain.
If you go to the value for money open days on a Friday, as we tend to do, you should take your time to stroll slowly through the gardens stop to appreciate the planting, the colourful flowers and blooms (depending on the time of year) and simply stop to listen to the birdsong, breathe in the fresh air and admire the stunning views of La Alpujarra.
People there do not race against time.
We are keen gardeners so appreciate the hard work that has gone into creating this oasis. But even we have questions about some plants and Robert and William are always on hand to give us informative answers, especially when it comes to which plants do and do not do best at such altitude.
If you've driven a long way to visit these gardens, and perhaps sample some superb home cooking, then you should sit back, kick off your shoes and relish a rare treat.
We recently attended a new venture at Jardin de la Alpujarra. With trepidation we went to a wood oven cookery course and were astonished to be cooking alongside the likes of the famous author Chris Stewart, of 'Driving Over Lemons' fame. He lives nearby. It was a fabulous day.
William is an excellent cook in his own right and he put everyone at their ease and showed us how to cook best using a wood oven. Chris Stewart was not alone in being grateful for the tips. So were we. I think more wood oven cookery courses are planned, so do check them out.
It's great that these gardens are so authentic and natural. Too often these days gardens open to the public are too formal and pompous.
No such problems here. At Jardin de la Alpujarra it's great that you can see gardens in all their glory, and with only the most minimal and voluntary donation to a very good cause. We shall return this summer and are very much looking forward to it. Keep up the good work, gentlemen.

We visited the gardens yesterday which is 300 meters below the main road at Portugos in the Alpujarra. Access is quite steep but it is a tarmac road and plenty of parking at the bottom. We were a party of 50 from the coast so a large party to cater for. On arrival we were greeted by Robert who made us very welcome and we had the opportunity to buy hot beverages and home made cake which was delicious.

After a short introduction by Robert we explored the gardens which are on different levels and had a variety of plantings, some we easily recognised others we had to ask the names of. there were plenty of places to sit and admire the view which was spectacular and much thought had been given to shady areas which had aromatic plants growing over the pergolas such as a stunning white wisteria and a Banksia rose, a lovely yellow which has a spicy scent.

Walking through we passed chickens, a potting shed, and then on to the veg patch which was very well tended and great to see rhubarb growing so well.

Robert and William made lunch for us which was delicious with plenty to go round, with home made focaccia, made by William and scrummy.. A glass of wine washed it all down and for afters more home made desserts including apple cake, strudel and a chocolate cake.

This garden is evolving and we hope to have a return visit to see what more has been done.

Stunning scenery, lovely place to pend time in and I enjoyed my visit. You will need a camera and flatties.

Visited the gardens yesterday and were rather disappointed. Leaflet says entrance by donation, but notice at entrance stated entrance costs €2.50. Nice garden but 10 minute walk round and saw everything. Lunch supplied at €15 per head was definitely not value for money. Small portion of pork and potato plus salad. Pudding was a piece of cake which although delicious was tiny, and a drink.

Sorry your were disappointed with your visit, I know that you travelled a long way. The entrance is indeed a donation, as stated on the board at the entrance, and had you spoken to us about your feelings we would have been happy to refund the 2,50 euros. As for lunch, this was organised as part of a group. I served the lunch myself and asked what people would like to eat, some people wanted more, some wanted less. Second helpings were freely available at no extra cost, and some people took advantage of this. We are sorry to read these comments on this forum, had you mentioned any of your concerns to us in person we would have done what we could to ensure you were fully satisfied with your experience. Jardín de la Alpujarra is a non profit making organisation, we work as volunteers in order to share our pleasure in horticulture and to develop the garden here. We receive no funding from outside bodies, so any donations receive, no matter how small, are put to good use.

We drove past the entrence to here everyday we left our holiday home in the area, so we decided to visit the next time it was open, which is only on Fridays.
Parking is limited to four cars, and is best approached from the main road from Pitres.
The garden is nice, the flowers were in bloom when we were there, the roses were especially nice.
This was a family visit, two adults and a four year old. We spent around half an hour walking and exploring the garden, then enjoyed a half hour on the veranda enjoying the views, tasting the home made cake and lemonade.
Our four year old requested another walk around the garden, which again was for around half an hour.
We chatted to one of the owners, who was very friendly and told us about the garden.
