Lannie, Ralph and Albert, the owners of Coast Mountain Expeditions (CME), introduced us to the word, Soliphilia: “love for a place that inspires personal responsibility and political solidarity to protect it”. We admired how this family “walks the talk” on Read Island growing their own food and engaging in community efforts to preserve natural ecosystems.

Our 7-day Octopus Islands Expedition was a fantastic experience! Albert and our guides were upbeat, knowledgeable about the wilderness & marine life, efficient in organizing logistics, and accommodating when I had an injury, always with safety a priority. We saw humpbacks, seals, and a myriad of intertidal life. The equipment was top notch, campsites pristine, and every meal/snack delectable, organic, homegrown, and lovingly prepared by Lannie behind the scenes. During a wilderness walk, Ralph educated us about the coast’s history and wildlife, the importance of conscientious forest management, and the ongoing need to be active stewards of coastal ecosystems.

We highly recommend CME for an epic kayaking experience and the opportunity to appreciate ‘Soliphilia’ in amazing marine and land environments.

This is the second trip my husband and I have done with CME (Octopus Islands last year). The Bute Inlet expedition is not for the weak. It’s a challenging trip and the weather is always a variable. Every part of the trip was well planned and implemented, complete with pickup on time. I love that they always do and give guests the opportunity to practice assisted rescue before setting out from the lodge the next day. Safety was paramount. The lodge was very comfortable and we were served up a beautiful meal of salmon the night we arrived.

The paddling days were on the long side but necessary to get where we wanted to go. The guides did a good job of breaking up the paddling with short stops along the way so we were never paddling for more than 2 hours between breaks. It seemed that we got fed something every couple hours. The food and snacks were exceptional. We ate mostly vegetarian with some clams one night. The guides prepared all the food and everything was delicious.

I cannot praise the guides enough. The leadership was reassuring and the knowledge of the area and conditions was invaluable.

The last night was wonderful getting back to the lodge, having a hot tub, a hot shower, a great meal and a comfortable bed.

I would highly recommend CME for a kayak trip/expedition. It is great value if you want to experience nature in all its forms. Be prepared to paddle and have the strength to carry kayaks up on shore and beyond to stay ahead of the tides.

Thank you CME for another fantastic kayaking experience.
K.

I can't say enough about this company and the 7 day Bute Fjord trip I did in August. Sure we lucked out with an incredible group of people and the weather held for us (just threats of rain) but there was pure professionalism, expertise and experience behind the thoughtful and exceptional experience Coast Mountain put together. I had 100% confidence in the guides and always felt cared for and encouraged. I was the least experienced of the group, but the guides never made me feel babied nor did they treat me differently (but they still watched out for me). Of course, the food was incredible, we had a true adventure in a very remote place. Story time, education, challenges, singing and lots of laughter. I was super impressed with the company's commitment to sustainability, their relationship to the land, first nations, the forest and sea. The majority of the folks on the trip were returning customers and all of us said we'd come back again. What a fantastic trip.

I love pristine wilderness and watching wild critters frolick and my needs were well met. I am also a glutton, and was a happy camper with the food being dished out both ahead of and on our kayaking voyage to Toba Inlet.

Our group comprised 3 double kayaks, and 4 singles for the muppet brigade and then we had Andy and Caelin guiding us through the existential straits. I can't praise the experience enough. This is the pacific north west, so there were soggy sections but the guides stiff upper lips coupled with a surprisingly resilience to the collective made the experience joyous and replete with warm fuzzy moments.

The experience is compelling enough that there were quick a few repeat offenders, some coming in for their 3rd session, others revisiting after 20 years. Clearly there is a compelling force at play, and it was groovy to see the intergenerational aspect to both Coast Mountain Expeditions and the attendees.

Just returned from the 7 day Octopus Island Expedition. You won't regret going on a trip with this family run business. Ralph, L'annie and Albert shared their passion for Reed Island and the ecology there. The guides, Andy and Caelen were wonderful and provided for a safe, educational and fun time away.

I had kayaked with Coast Mountain ten years ago to Toba Inlet. I heard about Butte Inlet and the Grizzly bears then and always wanted to return. I finally had my chance and it surpassed all my expectations. The kayaking was a challenge, 7-12 nautical miles each day. The guides and a couple of the other experienced kayakers gave me sound advice and I improved 100%. Butte Inlet is gorgeous and seeing the Grizzly bears at the end was a lifetime experience. 18 in 3 hours! The food is outstanding, fresh baked breads, home grown vegetarian meals. It is worth to come on one of these trips just for the food. The land part of the trip is rugged and I found it more challenging then the kayaking. I was the oldest (74). The cooperative spirit and camaraderie of the group and leaders made these challenges doable and enjoyable.

Over the years, my friends and I have self guided many of the classic paddles along the British Columbia coast, but there always comes a time when we agree it’s time for a “luxury paddle” with Lannie, Ralph and Albert Keller, the family who for over 35 years have given wonderful memories to so many with their company, Coast Mountain Expeditions, located on Read and Quadra Islands. Oh, the delight of once again feasting on Lannie’s exceptional cooking, listening to and learning from Ralph with his vast knowledge of the coast’s history and wildlife, and with thanks to Albert and our excellent guides taking care of the many unseen details that go into making the trip safe, spectacular and fun. Over the years, we have paddled Desolation Sound, the Orford River Grizzly Trip - my, those grizzlies move fast - rented Hill Island, and paddled on our own from Discovery Lodge. This year, July 2023, we had the perfect paddle through the exquisite Octopus Islands.
We highly recommend CME for your West Coast paddling adventure.

I had the grand privilege of being a participant on a Coast Mountain Expedition trip to Desolation Sound this past June. It was spectacular! I loved camping on the various islands in true wilderness settings. Hearing and seeing the humpbacks for more than 24 hrs was magical. The water is so clear, we could do tide pooling explorations from the comfort of our kayak seats. But it's not just about the setting. Our guides were well prepared and knowledgeable to the point where I didn't have a care in the world. Not only did I feel safe navigating the great Pacific waters, their culinary abilities kept us all quite satisfied. Ok, more than satisfied. Just so you know, you will not lose weigh on this trip unless you have great self control as the food is beyond average. We got to eat homemade cheesecake while watching the whales dance about in a remote corner of Cortes Island! This family owned company not only knows how to find the routes and provide high end culinary experiences, they are also excellent stewards of the land. They practice leave no trace wilderness ethics and have fought battles to protect the land. In fact, they haven't stopped fighting battles and are quick pass on their message of stewardship to their clients. I will definitely return to Coast Mountain Expeditions but this time I'll bring some friends.
