This is a great excursion, if you do a Western Caribbean cruise with a stop in Belize, you should, definitely, go for it.

We did the ranger for a day tour with the ya'axche team and it was fantastic -it was exactly what tourism should be. Our guide was super knowledgeable about the flora and fauna and made the walk so much more rich than if we had done it by ourselves. It was also great to hear how they are working with the communities and government for conservation efforts. If you have interest in learning about the wildlife in Belize do this tour!

The river patrol tour was beautiful and super educational too. What a treat to float gently down golden stream and learn about the wildlife and ecosystem of the area with such a knowledgeable person.
I also have to commend Marciella for all her help in coordinating the tour for me (travelling solo, it's hard to find groups to join sometimes, but she was super helpful in this) and her clear and prompt communication about everything before the tour started.
First rate experience and first rate organization. Definitely look into a tour with them. You'll have a fantastic time and will be supporting a great cause!

Enhance your visit to Toledo, Southern Belize by getting first-hand experience of hiking in a protected area with a local Ranger. We have spent a decent amount of time in Toledo and perhaps this should have been at the top of the list of things to do to orient oneself in the way of life in this part of the country. Hiking in a forest in the region provides a perspective of the flora and fauna that abound here and the challenges that the country and its people face in working towards its sustainability. The rangers are hugely knowledgeable and are happy to share their knowledge with visitors as one walks the forest, logging tracks and activity en-route. The trail used is not a challenging one - if the terrain is dry - and is an easy hike. Humidity is high as are chances of a rain-shower while trekking. Make sure you protect yourself against biting insects (although they were minimal in March, when we did the hike), with long pants and a long-sleeved top. Take head gear to protect against the sun (when you are not in the rain-forest) and enough water to keep yourself hydrated. The tour ends with a visit to one of the Mayan villages, where lunch is prepared by one of the numerous Women's Groups, who are happy to interact and share their life-style and culture. Lunch is simple, usually accompanied by corn tortillas and fresh fruit drinks.

Our group loved interacting with the rangers and with Brenda. Everyone went above and beyond to help us feel welcome. Thank you for facilitating such a meaningful learning experience for our group from Slippery Rock University. Our trip had the perfect mix of time for R&R, learning, and a variety of activities. The food was delicious too, and the students will be telling stories about this trip for years to come. Excellent value as well.

I had the opportunity to do both the land and river versions of Eco Tourism Belize's 'Ranger for a Day'. Both tours were great and highlighted the important work that is being done to conserve the natural beauty of Belize and protect its wildlife.
The rangers are truly impressive with the amount of knowledge they bring to identification of wildlife and tracks. The tapir tracks were HUGE and the amount of birds we saw would have made the trips worthwhile for the birding alone.
One of the great things about these tours is that every penny charged goes to support the rangers and the research being done at the Field Station in Golden Stream.
Bring appropriate shoes, bug spray, a small pair of binoculars if you can, a snack, some water and lose yourself in the jungle for a day!
