This was one of the most fantastic hikes I’ve done in the Ozarks! The steep hike out of the trail was brutal and would have preferred the more difficult part to be before the view but the overall experience was well worth it!

Yes you can hike from the Center point trailhead, across the Big bluff Goat trail, and down to the Buffalo River. Trail is not always marked but it is well traveled. Trekking poles recommended. Bring plenty of water and food. Approx 10 miles out and back. Rugged trail with rocks, roots, and dangerous cliffs overlooking the Buffalo River 350ft below when on Goat trail. Start at Center Point trailhead at 2180 ft elevation. Head on down trail dropping to approx 1310 ft elevation when you begin the Goat trail. Follow trail across Big bluff. Some very tricky areas on trail. When you reach other side the trail will descend down to 1000 ft elevation ending at the Buffalo River where you can cool off before returning. Would not recommend for animals or children. Dangerous sections.

I loved the Goat Trail part of the hike, but not as enthused over the first mile or so from the trailhead. It was our first hike in the area and we started later in the day than we should have. So the return trip was pretty tiring. We were there in the fall and the river was almost dry. Next time we'll go earlier in the year.

Hiked parallel to and looking down on the river to our right. Gorgeous scenery. Not difficult. Some cool old farmstead structures in the area, too.

Found out about this hike while doing my research for our trip to the Buffalo National River area. I wasn't sure we would be up to tackling it but hubby and I are so glad we did.

We started the hike around 8:15 am and were done by around 12:05 pm. We made it to the Goat Trail at 9:35 am. We probably spent at least a half hour on Big Bluff and had it to ourselves for most of that time.

Starting early meant the rocks were wet and the trail muddy in some spots so on the rocky areas we had to be careful. The bluff was also slightly wet in places. On the way back, the trail was drier. So something to be aware of.

There is a large hole to crawl through to get out on the bluff although I did see some people go down to the ledge to avoid it so you definitely do not have to climb through the hole.

Both hubby and I thought the hike back out was in some ways easier, probably due to the rocks being dry. While alot of it was uphill, it was not as steep as we expected.

I would say the hike was moderate to difficult in some places. Good hiking shoes or trail runners are a must. We did not have (or need) hiking poles or sticks but many people we saw had them. To get on the bluff, some spots are narrow.

I recommend watching videos on Youtube before the hike. Bring plenty of water and a protein bar or snack.

There is a free parking lot at the trailhead, probably enough for 10-15 cars. Across the road is a sign that says secure parking for $5 but we just parked in the trailhead parking lot. At the beginning of our hike, there were 3 other cars besides ours, when we left around 12:15 the lot was almost full.

The views from the bluff and the experience of being there is spectacular.

Today was our last hike of our week’s vacation in the Buffalo National River park, and we started at the Centerpoint trail head. The round trip was about 6 miles ( some easy, some over and around rocks and boulders and some only a couple feet wide between the cliff wall and a couple hundred feet drop off the edge).

Several pictures along the way as well as fantastic views are attached.
One spot we climbed through a hole in the rock!

The trail in doesn't really feel like it is as steep as it is hiking back out. The hike itself is pretty standard woodland path, with not a ton of features and only a few rocky sections to break up the long walk. The payoff is the bluffs, which are beautiful. You will certainly get some great pics of the river, the bluffs and the hills beyond. Some scrambling might be required, depending on how far across the bluffs you want to go. Well worth it, but don't underestimate the hike out.

I searched the Big Bluff Goat Trail in Google and it took me to a place where many people were bathing in the river but zero signs of a hike. At a corner I saw a horse path and decided to follow it. I crossed the river 4 or 5 times from one side to the other and walked for an hour without finding anyone. Finally I found two people who were riding a horse and were heading towards the place and I followed them. The man explained that everyone came from the other side walking a lot but that in 10 minutes we would be there. He was correct. The view is spectacular and I did not find it as dangerous as the web says.

We rented a cabin in Ponca for our son's 21st birthday. His best friend and fiancé also joined us. Everyone absolutely loved hiking the Big Bluff and Goat Trail. We would love to hike the trail again and also go down to Granny Henderson's cabin, too!

This was an awesome experience to do with my nephew, Jaden.
We started the hike from Centerpoint. The trail is mostly downhill starting out on the way to the Big Bluff Goat Trail. The terrain is rough in some areas, so make sure you wear shoes with good traction. The Goat Trail itself was the best part with amazing views of the Buffalo River and is @ 350 feet tall! We had a blast, but you must be careful and pay close attention on the Goat Trail portion! We both took plenty of pictures and will definitely return in the Fall to capture all the Fall colors. Plan accordingly time wise because it is all uphill on the way back out. Take plenty of water with you on this outing. Out and back to Goat Trail is right at 6 miles. The trail goes on beyond that but due to time, we had to turn back.
Please note*
Do not go by what your GPS says as far as directions. That will take you @ 7 miles out of the way. When you enter into Ponca, stop at the Buffalo Outdoor Center on the right hand side and they can give you the best directions to the trail head at Centerpoint.
