Stunning building and grounds
We unexpectedly joined a tour group after unintentionally gate crashing the tour
Andrew the guide for the Abbey was very knowledgeable, friendly and thorough , it was a pleasure to have him shoe us around ( we did confess to gate crashing at the end of the tour 🙄) Thank you to everyone at the Abbey for a lovely day

This is a lovely venue and of genuine historical interest. The staff and volunteers throughout were super. The gardens, though, are tired and overgrown.

The story of Sir Francis Drake is very inteteresting, but theres not all that much to see in the building itself. Seriously renovated, so not that much of an atmosphere.

Volunteer ruined my visit
This elderly man was extremely rude to me today at Buckland Abbey. I was sitting quietly in the Great Hall at 16.10 when he demanded I leave at once. When I reminded him the Abbey was open to 16.30 he acted like a Plymouth pub bouncer, saying "Haven't you a home to go to", and that the volunteers had no obligation to keep the site open and that Iwas a disreputable character he didn't trust. This is by far the worse treatment I've ever had at a NT property and was completely unacceptable. I was fobbed of when I asked to see the duty manager.
I expect you to provide a full apology and remind him of his obligations to visitors.

A wonderful find on our way to a holiday destination . Called in here as we are NT members and saw it marked on the map close to where we were travelling. Such an interesting place and so well presented . The size of the long barn was remarkable as were the fascinating exhibits in the Abbey building itself. We were on a tight time schedule so were not able to visit for as long as we would have liked but will hopefully be back for a longer visit next time we’re in the area

How disappointing to see the neglect on this place.
We visited many years ago when the place was pristine and well cared for.
Now the gardens are full of weeds which are also growing through the walls & gutterings.
All the obelisk’s and espalier trees have been removed from the Elizabethan garden.
The Cider garden had nothing of interest left whatsoever, but there were some very large brambles overhanging the footpath (enough to do serious damage to your eyes). Such a pity that such decay has been allowed.
Not sure why they have put a skittle alley in the Tythe barn. I would have thought it better placed on the lawn with the archery etc.
We will not be recommending Buckland Abbey to our friends. It is so sad to see its demise.

This place is very shabby & has a very bad reputation locally.
Buckland Abbey has illegal closed local footpaths, such as the path linking Denham bridge with Lopwell dam. They also make no effort to tackle the enormous amount of invasive weeds, such as cherry laurel & Snowberries from spreading onto ajoining land.
Unlike other National trust places, like Cotehele; Buckland charges just for walking around the outer grounds, even for locals & they give no discount for disabled or carers.
Worsed of all is the association this place has historically with the slave trade & state sponsored piracy.

Decided to go here and look around the gardens .was not impressed that we were told it would be £15 each .to walk around even though we didn't want to go in the house .They don't even do a discount for disabled & carer .ie carer go free .other NT Places do discount. And if you want to just do gardens it usually free.yes they do have a disabled car park of 6/8 spaces in total. Which is tiny compared to how big the main car park is .so No don't recommend this place at all .don't think all areas are fully accessible so not getting a discount is disgraceful

Same as the others, National Trust members. Worth getting particularly Scottish National Trust as its cheaper and allows you to go to All National Trust places not just Scotland.

My father and I are not NT members but we would like to visit the grounds & walk around for a few hours and have lunch in the cafe if possible - do we pay to have access to the grounds? Thank you.

Are there day tours to buckland abbey from Exeter and Plymouth
Escrita el 22 de febrero de 2017
I'm really sorry Karin, I've only just read your question, I am not aware of tours from Plymouth or Exeter, my suggestion would be to contact a Devon Tourist office.
