Panmure Island Lighthouse boasts two firsts on PEI - this is PEI's first octagonal lighthouse (a rarity in lighthouse shapes apparently) AND it's PEI's first wooden lighthouse! And here's an even more fun factoid - it was built back in 1853 without using a single nail!!
We had so much fun exploring here - the lighthouse is an architectural beauty with interesting museum exhibits on each floor as you ascend to the tower. They have a lovely display of different fresnel lenses - even a 4th order beehive fresnel which I loved!
There are four levels with four flights of stairs - each getting progressively more narrow and steep as you make your way up - but it's totally worth the climb. The last flight of stairs is more like a wooden ladder so it's best to go very slowly and be sure to descend backwards - much easier this way and much more safe.
The tower views are magnificent!! You get almost a 360° vista of where the entrance to Cardigan Bay meets the Georgetown Harbour! This is still very much a functional lighthouse so be careful while in the tower bc it's very bright when it goes off and probably not good for your eyes lol.
The gift shop on the ground floor is full of works from local artists and great for souvenirs. Prices are reasonable in the gift shop and the entry price for the lighthouse is excellent! Staff are very welcoming, knowledgeable, and happy to share info about the building as well as the area.
There's a small unpaved parking area with some port-a-potties at the entrance. They also have a large wooden deck with 5-6 picnic tables right on the water - a great place to relax and enjoy the views after your climb - and you can admire the beautiful horses in the field next door! The lighthouse is open seasonally from mid June to mid October.
Storm clouds rolled in towards the end of our visit and made for some very dramatic and beautiful photo ops! All in all one of my fave lighthouse experiences during my Nova Scotia adventures - highly recommend!

So glad someone recommended this beach to us. It’s about an hours drive from Charlottetown, but totally worth it. The views are stunning! Perfect beach for families with children or anyone who doesn’t like crowds. The beach has beautiful white sand, and the water is perfect for swimming having a beautiful sandy bottom. Parking is free with clean washrooms that have a shower. There’s also a nice little place to buy lunch (including ice cream). Totally recommend

Quiet beautiful beach with hardly any waves. It was so nice and relaxing to sit on the beach watching the waves slowly coming into shore.
Down the road there’s a fun lighthouse that you can walk up the four flights of steep stairs to the very top. There’s a gift store on the main floor. A pot-a-potty is on the property.

Drove out along the isthmus to the lighthouse on the island.
Well worth the effort, especially as it was very quiet.
A wooden working lighthouse in great condition.
Some lovely beaches in the distance and we saw seals just offshore.

As recommended by a friend, I camped (tent) at Panmure Island Provincial Park, for the first time. It is a smaller, quaint campsite with the necessary amenities, and friendly and informative staff. It is a minute drive or, 5 or so minute walk, to the beach. You can continue on across the short causeway where you can see, I believe, the oldest wooden lighthouse on the Island. I have never been to the eastern section of PEI, except to take the ferry years ago. Although I did take the bridge this time, I would recommend taking the ferry from Nova Scotia, as it it closer to Panmure Island area, if wish to get there quicker. Of course, that depends where you are travelling from. I definitely plan to return to that area of the island and explore more of the east coastal region...lots of unique villages, 50+ beaches, and a more relaxed atmosphere. Have Fun!!

The beach is free, no day-use fee, it's beautiful and not as full of people as other beaches can get. The campground, however, lacks in may areas. The bathrooms are clean, I will give them this. We take some responsibility for making certain assumptions about what a "provincial park" would include. In many provinces, provincial parks have trails for hiking and biking, employees to give information about local tourist spots, sometimes kayak rentals, and well-taken-care-of playgrounds for children. This park has a "tired" playground that has seen better days, and wide open spaces that are theoretically divided into camp sites. No privacy, no trees, you are parked in a field. I went to ask at the office about food, while looking at the menu for "Pinkys" that is tacked beside the office window, and no one explained to me that "Pinkys" was the little restaurant on the beach on Panmure Island. They just told me at the office that no, they didn't have any coffee or ice cream.I didn't know, I just got there! No place to sit when you do your laundry, if you choose to go in the cramped space that is the laundry shack. They let you use the wifi for three days only, even though we stayed five days. This felt more like a poorly-kept-up private RV park than a Provincial Park, in our humble opinion. If you just need a place to park your RV or set up your tent for a few days, and you don't care where you are, this might be ok for you. If you wanted a place with some activities or amenities, this is not for you. But visit the beach, it's worth it!

Campsite well located on the water's edge, near the beach and the lighthouse.
Be careful with online reservations. Site #8 is not in the right place on the map vs. on the ground.
Clean sanitary blocks.

We headed to Panmure because it has a lighthouse at the end of the long beach and, well, we like lighthouses. For enthusiasts, it was one of the better ones, although not accessible inside. It provides a commanding view of the long Panmure beach, which is wide, sandy and looks not too steep, i.e., works for smaller children. We enjoyed walking on the beach and dabbling our toes in the coolish waters. Extra added bonus—at the south end of the beach, anchoring the parking lot is a great ice cream stand (Pinky's) and public washrooms. $2.75 each got us a "kids cone" completely stuffed with ice cream, and what I would describe anywhere else as a double scoop. I just asked for a "single scoop" and that's what I got.
Well worth a driving visit or a full day on the beach. If you want more than ice cream you will need to bring your own cooler.

Another PEI beach. We visited several and yes this is a nice beach but there was nothing that stood out about it. It is a great beach for kids to run around and enjoy the gorgeous ocean.

Are there serviced sites here? What ones? The site map is very vague.

What are the hours? How much to climb the lighthouse? Is the water warm enough to swim?

Hi There! Not sure what time they open but they close it at 6pm. If I recall correctly, the tour of lighthouse was by donation only, but other similar places ask for anything between $4-7 per person.
Did not swim there, so cannot help with this question, but the nearby beach was quite lovely, with white sand and very quiet. Hope this helps!
