We drove on this Highway 149 from Gunnison to South Fork. It was really worth it. There were beautiful views of the mountains and the already colored forests. A great nature where you should spend a little more time. The road and the pass Slumgullion are easily navigable. There were lookouts with information boards. In Creede we had taken a break and visited the mine museum. We can highly recommend this Scenic route.

Silver thread escape cabin 4. We recently spent 3 unacceptable nights in this cabin. Our first contact was to pay in advance to the amount of $975.61; that is $325.20 per night, sight unseen; or the owner would not provide the security code for obtaining the key within its lockbox. For that rate, we expected a well appointed and well maintained cabin--inside and out. Boy, were we disappointed. Not only was the cabin shabby throughout, but hardly up to the standard for that daily rate. We found the low level and lack of delivery of customer service commensurate to the shabbiness of the cabin and its surroundings. We stuck it out for the 3 days and nights and wrote the owner relative to the shortcomings within and without the cabin . The owners response was that they were correcting the issues we pointed out; but this would be for the succeeding guests. There was no recognition of our questionable experience or any offer to compensate us. In effect, we had paid $325 for a cabin that should have been priced in the $150 or lower range. Needless to say we will not be returning to the cabin or referring anyone else.

This whole trip was fantastic, starting with South Fork, the visitors Center, Revolution Bike & Rail. Than on to Creede using the Silver Thread Byway Stops/Markers for scenic sites. Etc. Seeing the two mining museums. One underground, along with the fire dept underground also. Then Bachelor Loop self guided mining tour, Last Chance Mine and tour. Then onward too both falls, South/North Clear Creek Falls. Don't miss them. We stayed on the byway all the way to the end and landed in Montrose, CO.

The Silver Thread Byway is one of Colorado's very best scenic routes and the historic part really deals with the silver mines of Creede the site of the states last major silver boom in 1891 You might also stop and drive the Bachelor Loop 17 mile drive north of Creede and through the old mining district and be sure to stop and visit the Last Chance Mine a mine tour, rock collecting, free museums and area photo gallery

This 117 mile road follows old toll, stagecoach and rail routes that were important supply lines for silver and gold mining camps of the late 1800's. It starts at South Fork, goes through Creede and Lake City all the way to Gunnison. The views are varied with waterfalls, rivers, mountains, trees and valleys. This was a beautiful drive especially during our visit in October seeing the fall colors of the aspen leaves.

This is one of the very best ways to view the southern Colorado foliage. Check online to see when to take this drive and start from the eastern end near Creede to have the best views in the second half of your drive.

This is a great waterfall with easy access for both handicapped enable body. There is a bathroom. There is also a very nice hike around the park the few people know about or see on the opposite side of the waterfall behind the bathroom about 300 yards there is a bench and a fantastic view of the mountains. Most people miss this part

The San Juan Skyway gets all the press. The Silver Thread is a great alternative. Really only two towns (Creede and Lake City) between South Fork and Route 50 near Gunnison. The high point is Slumgullion Pass (11,530 ft). Great views all the way.

The Silver Thread Highway follows the original trail of silver prospectors, including this stop in Lake City, Colorado, which has an information center and a tourist mine outside of town.
