This museum starts with an interesting talk from Charles, one of the staff members in the former class room. After that, you can explore the rest of the museum by your self. On display is Ute history, Fire Fighters history and a bit wild west history. Outside are two buildings historically furnished to get the impression how it once was to live here. According to us this museum is a hidden gem.

Best mining museum I have ever visited! Give yourself at least an hour; two would be better.
The jail tour is connected and is a very good museum as well.
The mining museum starts in the basement of the jail and then goes across and upstairs (two floors!) and then back down to the main floor.

Good rainy day activity. Plenty of parking. Free to enter but donations accepted. Staff obviously is passionate bout what they do. Found some of the exhibits a bit difficult to know what order I should read things in but overall enjoyable. My favorite was learning about the fire fighting history.

Interesting history museum of the area. Lots of artifacts and information. We came across this place by accident walking around town.

We took a break from riding in the car and stopped at this museum to learn some of the history of the area. The museum is located in a three story building which was a schoolhouse at one time. Admission was only $4 per person and we could explore on our own. We enjoyed seeing the old photos and movies. The people in the 1800's had to be hearty people. We also could explore an old house next door that was furnished in period decor. Informative stop!

Very well organized and documented history of the Durango area. An intimate look at the "Old West" here in southwest Colorado.

Located in an old schoolhouse, this museum was informative about local history as well as reminiscent of my old elementary school days. One could spend a great dale of time looking at the various artifacts and watching film clips with people dressed as some of Durango's more colorful past citizens.

We moved to Durango 2 years ago and new some history of the town. We wanted to find more about the town. The Animas Museum has a wealth of information. Plenty is old photos and biographies of the people who made Durango Durango. There is also a cabin on the property that was one of the originals. You can tour the cabin. I would recommend that visitors and locals to go to the museum. We found it to be very interesting.

At the Animas Museum, where it is said the past touches the future, visitors of all ages can explore the history of Durango, Colorado, and La Plata County. From Wild West outlaws and the brave lawmen who tamed the county, to generations of firefighters who shaped the community, Durango's real history reads like a western novel. The museum, located at 3605 West 2nd Avenue, in the former Animas City School Building that dates to 1904, features four historically restored classrooms that speak to an era of blackboards, inkwells and the three Rs, readin', ritin' and 'rithmatic. Step back in time and learn about the origins of La Plata County, prepare to be amazed at the tale of Durango's strangest shootout, when the marshal shot the sheriff, and visit the 1870s Joy Cabin, the town's oldest intact structure. As 78-year-old retirees, we could appreciate the exhibit of the early 20th century classrooms with high ceilings, large double-hung windows, school-house lights, slate blackboards with chalk and ornate desks. Learn about the cowboys who roamed the valleys and the bitter feud that rivaled the Hatfields and McCoys, the hangings, shootings and bank robberies. Also learn about the ancient Basketmaker people who once lived in the Animas Valley. See the World War I exhibit in the Main Gallery. Learn about the history of pioneers, prospectors and trout fishermen in La Plata County. The Native American Gallery displays pottery, basketry, beadwork and weavings from the Four Corners region and beyond. The Joy Cabin, an authentic 19th century pioneer dwelling, is the oldest structure still standing in Durango. The interior has been restored to look as it did when it was first built in the 1870s. Other exhibits include "Home Sweet Home," a look at historic houses in the area; "Along the Route," which documents some of the bygone stagecoach and railroad stops; "Riches of the Earth," which recalls the agricultural and mining history of the area; and "The Great Outdoors," which details the recreational history of the area. It's hard to imagine that so much information has been packed into such a relatively small space. But it's well organized and well presented. And it brings back a lot of memories.

There is a lot of information packed into a small space here. Unique to this museum is one room dedicated to the history of native occupation in the region, interesting, and an especially interesting (to me) exhibit on the local lawmen vs outlaws history which was doubtless the true basis of many western tales you can read to this day. This museum is well worth a visit.
