My family just hiked both these peaks last week (youngest: 19, oldest: 53). Some of us are okay with exposure; others not so much. But in spite of the fact that it's been a very dry summer in Colorado, both hikes were beautiful and still featured some columbines and gentians in August. My wife and youngest daughter hated the Class 3 climbing on Wetterhorn, but they toughed it out and were thrilled that they did. They were a bit apprehensive about Uncompahgre because of Wetterhorn, but we found it to be quite a straightforward hike (especially if you have a 4WD that will allow you to start 4 miles away instead of 8). Definitely two 14ers that demand your attention!!

This is a must see if you are the area. It is one of the most beautiful places on earth. The majesty of the mountains is awe inspiring!

Wetterhorn and Uncompahgre are two great 14ers in the San Juan Mountains. They are not too easy, also not too difficult (class 3 and 2). There is some exposure on Wetterhorn's summit block but not too bad. Pay attention if you have never done any class 3 climb. It's actually a great peak to introduce you to the transition from hiking to scrambling. Bring a high clearance 4WD vehicle to save yourself some mileage and elevation gain, otherwise start super early.

Drive west along 20 from Lake City until you see signs for the Matterhorn Creek trailhead. I had a 4WD low clearance vehicle and had to park at lower section about a half mile before the trailhead. Only high clearance 4WD vehicles were able to get all the way up to that trailhead. There is plenty of camping all around the trailhead and further up as well.
I intended to climb Wetterhorn and Uncompahgre on two separate days but was hailed out close to Wetterhorn peak on the first day so had to reattempt the next. It is possible to get both peaks in one day but it's about 17 miles round trip so you'd have to start extremely early and have a lot of energy.
The views are spectacular and there are many marmot families up in the rocks around Wetterhorn. The last 30 yards or so to the top are somewhat difficult which is why it's rated as a class 3 but if the weather is good and dry then it's very doable.

My wife and I climbed Uncompahgre. All the other reviews below are true! My added suggestions -- try and get a 4-wheel drive vehicle to get to the trailhead. From there, it's a 3.5 mile to the summit. And start early. We left Lake city at 5:30am and was hiking by 6:15am. We summited at 9:30am and ejoyed the summit views for 45 minutes before heading down. It's a good first-time 14er - not too technical.

We saw these peaks while traveling the Alpine Loop in a Jeep. Since I am unable to hike now due to health conditions, we were only able to see them from a distance. But the view was still beautiful from the road.

This is a GREAT climb and almost anyone can it. It's not easy, but it's not technical, and it's just simply amazing. One of the best times of my life. Take a group and then eat at one of the outstanding places in Lake City for dinner on your way out. Fantastic.

It's hard to lump these peaks as one is an easy hike and the other (Wetterhorn) is a climb. If you are in Lake City and seeking some adventure, look into these peaks. The Sportsman in Lake City can get you to the trail heads and give you advice on how to be prepared and safe for the trek. Even if you don't summit, the views are awesome and you'll have a great time.

My husband and I summited Uncompahgre during our visit to Lake City in August. Being flat-landers, we allowed several days to acclimate beforehand. This was also our first 14er! The trail is very easy to follow until you reach an area near the summit which requires some scrambling. The sun was shining brightly when we reached the summit at midmorning, but within minutes we knew we needed to descend. An hour later, and still quite a distance from the trailhead we encountered thunder and a show shower! Be prepared, and enjoy your conquest of Unc!

Wetterhorn Peak (14,015 ft.) and Uncompahgre Peak (14,309 ft.) offer dramatic contrasts and great natural beauty. From Lake City, passenger cars can follow Henson Creek Road and North Henson Creek Road to the jeep road up to the Matterhorn Creek trailhead. Lovely primitive National forest campsites here offer forest or meadow camping by the creek. The 8-mile round-trip trail up Wetterhorn Peak takes you to an incredible alpine landscape with wildflowers, sand dunes, and dramatic peaks of red, amber, and gray. Uncompahgre, the 6th highest peak in Colorado, lies 3 miles east of Wetterhorn across a lovely meadow and colorful dunes. From the trailhead it is a 14-mile round trip hike that lets you enjoy stream-side trails, tranquil forests, alpine vistas, and dramatic mountain scenery.
