Beautiful trail that leads you to a wonderful river in 15 minutes. I know they have another trail that leads to ice caves but we did not do that one

Near the start the river gorge/canyon was wonderful. Followed by a long open valley. Got to second foot bridge and turned around for an almost 7 mile round trip. What a nice hike and I’ll be back.

This trail is easy in places difficult in other places. We turned around about the three mile marker. I would recommend not to wear sandals or flip flops on this trail we did see a snake.

Great Trail, beautiful scenery. It took a little while to get to from Pagosa, but within a half mile of the hike it was totally worth it. We only went 2 miles out to the bridge and turned around. I'd probably recommend only going 1 mile out with small children.

We hiked the piedra ice fissures trail. At the beginning when the trail splits, go right, up the hill. It’s a steep hike (>300 feet elevation gain). Definitely worth it though. The fissures we neat and the view over the canyon was breathtaking. Download the All Trails app and download this trail to keep up with the hike as you go. Make sure to take the circular detour to get a better view over the river. Go in the morning for less people.

Beautiful riverside hiking trail. We found the trail to be wet, muddy, snowy and icy in parts. Hiking boots a must. Poles recommended. Trail is passable and truly enjoyable.

Easy hike for all ages with beautiful scenery. Fishing is good in places as well. I have hiked this trail in the summer and fall and it's never too crowded.

Bit of a drive on a dirt road to get there but very peaceful, easy hike along the river. We went about two miles, had a snack, and came back.

This was an easy trail that is perfect for a family. We hiked down to the bridge and back: about 2.5 miles. We stopped and took a lot of pictures so it took us an hour and a half.

We had been told when you started the trail you could go left on the river trail or go right on a trail that would lead you to some ice fissures. We went to the right. We were also told once you got there you could find a trail that went to the right, go 1/4 to 1/2 mile and you would come to the top of a bluff . We did and were we rewarded. You are looking out over a large valley with the Piedra River running down through it. It was gorgeous!! We then followed the bluff around and came back to the river trail. So, we went several miles down that and back. A lot of hiking but well worth it. I wish they had signs up for more. It was beautiful.

Is this trail busy enough to be safe for a single woman? I'm visiting the area and have no hiking companions.

I would check website but I don't remember seeing any signs prohibiting dogs. It would not be a problem for dogs, no rock climbing or anything like that. Hope that helps

There is a hot spring available on the Lower Piedra trail. It is a bit more intensive of a hike, and due to high water is currently washed out.

I have only been on the trail in September or July. Looking at the weather the area has been having ,I would say snow packed.

Do we need a car with high ground clearance to drive on the road that leads to the trailhead?

absolutely not this time of year! We had a.Kia Optima and had no issue.

You could carry one in a carrier on your back quite a ways down the path, but I'd be careful allowing young ones walk on their on. There are some edges above the river early in the hike that wouldn't be advisable.
