Enjoying an air conditioned touring bus on a very hot day, I learned a lot about the gangsters in my home town. John is an excellent tour guide :well informed and light hearted. I love architecture as well and one can't beat what Oak Park & River Forest has to offer. Thanks John for a delightful experience !

I travel a great deal and take a numerous tours, but I have never found a guide as versed in his subject as John Binder. He has made the Chicago mob his study and has been one of the experts interviewed in several documentaries about the mob or more accurately The Outfit. This is not the tongue in cheek gangster tours offered in downtown Chicago, but a tour where you learn a wealth of information about many of the major Outfit figures and see where they lived. It's so exciting to take a tour with a guide who is actually excited himself about the subject. I have taken his tour twice and hope to do so again. I believe he's going to offer tours of some of the downtown sites, which should be equally fascinating. And he even points out a restaurant where the mob hung out, so you can end the tour eating where the gangsters used to dine.

Interested in some history? Great history of The Gangster era? This is for you. See the homes that were lived in by the big names in the Chicagoland mob. John does a great job of informing and having fun at the same time. Great stories to tell about life in and around the mob.....makes it 'real'!

John is not only a master of the written word, but a master tour guide. This tour brings to light the mystery of the Chicago Mob after prohibition. The opulence of this life style is stunning, don't miss it.

John Binder's Oak Park River Forest Gangster tour is as enjoyable as it is informative. He is probably the most knowledgable person out there on this topic. That knowledge enables him to speak off the top of his head in an eloquent manner, and he's more than willing to engage questions from the audience. When I took the tour in September 2017, the bus stopped at fourteen houses. You stay inside the air conditioned tour bus the entire time, since the houses are all privately owned and not open to tours. Dr. Binder has been inside most of the houses, however, and he describes their characteristics as it applies to the narrative he tells. He also passes around a couple of binders filled with photographs of mobsters discussed during the tour. The photos are from his extensive organized crime photograph collection. If you're at all interested in the history of organized crime in Chicago, you'll enjoy this tour. It isn't gimmicky at all. It is a professional tour by the top scholar in the subject. This isn't a tour filled with conspiracy theories, but rather a fact-based narrative about the houses and the mobsters who lived in them.

This is a great and informative tour led by an actual expert and scholar of the topic. John Binder has written books on the Chicago mob, has an extensive collection of original photos and documents from the Capone and Acardo eras and is often an expert appearing in film documentaries on the subject. He really knows the area and so, if you’re interested in the topic, he provides a really educational and interesting tour. Most of the most famous (or infamous) bosses in mob history lived in the Oak Park area (Sam Ginancana, Tony Acardo, Paul Ricca, etc.) and it’s a lot of fun seeing their prior homes and HQs. Highly recommended.

John Binder is literally the guy who wrote the books about some of Chicago's most notorious mobsters. I was so glad to have a chance to meet him and take his excellent "There Goes the Neighbor Hood" tour. He is an encyclopedia of Chicago mob knowledge and knows how to tell a great story. I was impressed that he not only knew the gangster homes as they were but can tell you a lot about some of the people who live there today. John generously gave us the addresses of the homes. I drove around a few months later to show my boyfriend but could not even begin to bring the homes alive like John does. The bus accommodations were first class too. I am a tour operator myself and I can't recommend this tour enough!
