Excellent historic site in downtown Portland. The house and contents are original or carefully reconstructed for historical accuracy. This is run the Maine Historical Society. The docent for our visit (Sue) was the best docent for historical sites we have ever encountered (and that goes back for decades!). She was enthusiastic and engaging...the tour flew by and we wanted it to continue.

We were there to see the house, not the Maine Historical Society. We bought a $10 ticket and then were told that we had to pay another $5 to see the house. Maybe the staff should ask visitors? Then we were told we had to wait 40 minutes to see the house because a guided tour was underway and we couldn't join it. When we finally were able to go in the house, we were told we had to download an app to get a self-guided tour that would play aloud. So if you don't have a smartphone, no info for you.

The rooms had no information posted for visitors to read. Oh but wait, they did have dozens of labels on furniture written in wordy, silly prose telling you not to touch or sit on anything. After about the 5th jokey label, it stopped being funny or cute. Here's an idea-- why not put some labels with actual useful, interesting historical facts about Longfellow and his family. The staff we met was unhelpful and unfriendly, EXCEPT for one lovely woman upstairs who was knowledgeable and happy to share history about the house and Longfellow. Overall, our experience was negative and could have been great if rooms had better displays, and some of the staff were more helpful.

This was a very interesting home with 95% of the original furnishings still intact and in original condition. The tour guide was the manager of the home and his knowledge and insight into the history of the property and its inhabitants was very impressive. Only takes about 45 minutes of your day so if you’re in the Portland area I recommend going.

This is a must -see stop for anyone interested in History, literature, poetry and historic preservation. The home has been amazingly preserved by the family in a lived-in condition prior to gifted to the Maine Historical Society. Over 90% of the items in the house are original from the great poet. This is an amazing chance to visit the home of a giant of literature.

The staff was very knowledgeable and friendly. Very helpful too! We arrived too late for the tour and the staff suggested we do the self guided tour using the museum. We did and loved it! Easy to navigate and the docents added to the tour with a couple of interesting facts and stories. Highly recommend for any American literature fan!

Three generations called this home before it and 98% of its furnishings became a museum. I would have benefited from a guided rather than self-guided tour.

The website for this home is frustratingly lacking in visitor information, but don’t let that discourage you. Call to find out the hours of operation. The home is tucked right in the middle of downtown Portland, between modern buildings. You buy your tickets at the visitor center/museum next door. Parking is at meters on the street. The tours are self-guided, but you can download an app and there are docents on each floor. The home contains 98% of the original furnishings and belongings and the home has been remarkably conserved. The docents were enthusiastic and friendly. The woman who manned the gift shop not so much. We were in the process of buying tickets when I asked for the restrooms and she snapped we couldn’t use them unless we purchased tickets. Really? She was very put out by questions. I wish the museum attached to the gift shop would have had more information about the Wadsworths and Longfellows, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow in particular, but it didn’t. Longfellow grew up here, but I didn’t completely understand how he came to live in his grandfather’s home or the family relationships and learned nothing about Longfellow or his life. I had to resort to Wikipedia when I got home. Still, the home and small gardens are worth a visit.

Fantastic tour of this historic home. It was a self guided tour that had audio capabilities but the docents that were in the house offered amazing stories about the history of the home and the family. They helped to make the tour amazing! Really enjoyed our visit here and learning about this home as well as how well the home has been maintained/preserved.

Call before you go. We went here at 2:45 on a Monday afternoon and they would not let us in. They said a group had shown up unexpectedly from NYC and rather than let us go to the gardens first and then go in the house, they just told us we could come back in an hour. Disappointing.
