The quilting fabric was extremely inexpensive and there was a ton of it! Great quality, too. So much fun! My suitcase is going to be terribly overweight but my heart is happy!

Okay; someone let the secret out about the Marden’s Surplus & Salvage stores elsewhere in Maine. Now it’s time to share the existence of more Marden’s stores that I’ve shopped at either solo or with friends.
Marden’s Surplus & Salvage is a great place to shop for all kinds of bargains ~ from groceries, snacks, clothing and shoes for the whole family to fashion accessories, fabric, sporting goods, tools, automotive items, housewares, small appliances, toiletries, vitamins, stationery items, calendars, and much more. Marden’s sells a lot of closeouts and surplus.
I love shopping and sometimes just browsing at Marden’s. I never know what I’m going to find. It’s a bargain-hunter’s paradise!
I shop one Marden’s or another about once a month because the merchandise changes frequently. Marden’s has over a dozen locations throughout Maine.
This is the largest Marden’s Surplus & Salvage store; and, it’s just over one mile away from the Maine Mall in South Portland, so a trip here can be easily coupled with a trip to that mall, or vice versa.
On my most-recent visit with a friend which was my second visit to this one on Payne Road in Scarborough, we headed straight for the sale racks just inside the door. I spotted a cuffed long sleeve of something mauve. I pulled it down, looked at it, and had to have it. It was an Outback Trading Company® 100% cotton V-Neck “Tulle Tee” knit top with long cuffed sleeves and applied Western-style pointed shoulder and rear yokes trimmed in an embroidered floral/geometric design called “florid” on the manufacturer’s tag. It was in a mauve shade that Outback called Lilac. The styling was very unique. The Compare At MSRP was $54.00. Marden’s original price was $8.99. The sale price was $5.00.
Inside the store, there were racks with closeouts from an unnamed department store at 75% off the retail prices. The racks held women’s long-sleeved and short-sleeved tops. I saw designer brands, such as Tommy Hilfiger, Sean Jean, and many others. There was a Lucky Brand with an original price of $49.50. A Style & Co. floral and geometric print top had an original price of $49.50. I also came across a navy Lauren rain jacket and a fuchsia INC top with an original price of $69.50.
In Girls’ Dresses, I saw a Hello Kitty dress by Evy of California with an original store price tag of $42.00 and a white organza special occasion dress with an original store price tag of $74.00. The same 75% Off Sale prices applied there, too.
While there, I looked in other departments. I had my camera with me as I don't leave it in the SUV. I took some photos.
In the Purses Dept., I found Reg. $130.00 Vera Bradley® Quilted Travel Bags as well as backpacks and totes at 50% off. I also found TRIFORCE Elite Performance Travelware hard-side travel purses in fun ice cream colors and black patent leather. Those were also 50% off.
In the Grocery Dept., I saw full-sized boxes of cereals such as Kellogg’s Special K and Kellogg’s Eggo Waffle Cereal and travel-size individual-serving cups of Kellogg’s Sugar Pops and Kellogg’s Apple Jacks as well as General Mills Lucky Charms and General Mills Honey Nut Cheerios that the youngsters like for breakfast and snacking.
In the Health & Beauty Aids section, I found brand name hair care items from Suave, VO5, and Aqua Net among others.
On a trip to Augusta and the Boothbay Region, a friend and I shopped at this Marden’s Surplus & Salvage in Scarborough. This was the first visit to this Marden’s for both of us.
First, we looked at the Clearance Sale racks of clothes. There was nothing for either of us. Then, we split up.
I shopped the knit tops. I was specifically looking for a pastel yellow summer top. I’d shopped the stores in Biddeford and Sanford prior to this trip. After three Marden’s stores, I still didn’t find that elusive pastel yellow summer top; however, I did come up with:
1. a New York & Company’s The 7th Avenue Design Studio 96% polyester/4% Spandex® cap-sleeved crisscross-banded V-Neck knit top in a pale pastel peach shade. The MSRP tag read $29.95. Marden’s 66% Off Price was $10.18 + 6.5% Maine Sales Tax of 66¢ for a total of $10.84.
2. a New York & Company’s The 7th Avenue Design Studio 96% polyester/4% Spandex® short-sleeved U-Neck w/ laced-up V in a mid-range pastel peach. The MSRP tag read $39.95. The Marden’s 66% Off Price was $13.58 + 6.5% Maine Sales Tax of 88¢ for a total of $14.46.
In the Grocery Dept. aisles, I found and got:
1. a Reg. $3.29 bag of Late July Snacks Thin & Crispy Cantina Style White Corn Tortilla Chips at $1.79 which was 46% off.
2. Two 4 oz. bags of Uncle Ray’s Potato Chips at $1.00 each - The retail price was not shown. I had tried this brand on a recent purchase. The chips were of good quality with only one chip with a brown spot in the entire bag.
Housewares had some larger-size coffee cups. The lighthouse ones were pretty.
My friend got a mid-calf length batik pattern skirt at 66% off.
Heading out, we encountered a woman who'd just bought a new atrium/patio door sliding screen for $60.00. I've seen a similar screen selling for $130.00 at Lowe's.
We were in this Marden’s for about two hours. There's so much to see that visits of this duration are common.
In the past, I’ve gotten great buys on sportswear. The J. Jill brand shows up at Marden’s frequently. One can expect to save 50% or more on similar designer brand clothing. A lot of better-brand shoes are in the $20 - $30 price range.
We rate this Marden’s Surplus & Salvage at 5.0. We thought that this Marden’s was the best one of five Marden’s stores we’ve shopped so far.
We highly recommend stopping by this and any other Marden’s that one finds during one’s Maine travels.
