We loved this tour! If you go, ask for FRANK!! Frank gave us a very informative & interesting tour! He is very knowledgeable & the kindest person you will ever meet! He gave us some nutmegs to take home too.
When you are in the Spice Island, put the Nutmeg Museum tour with Frank on your list!

We visited the Victoria Nutmeg Museum in Gouyave, Grenada, on a cruise ship excursion. The museum was a very worthwhile visit as it was most informative about processing the nutmeg seed once farmers bring their harvest to the nutmeg grading station. Large boards in the museum explained each step of this process in point form with real examples as well as pictorial ones underneath as illustration. There even were vats filled with nutmeg being dried. These vats rose from the floor to ceiling filled with thousands of brown nutmegs! I was also fascinated by the grading process which showed photos of damaged and unacceptable nutmeg. I also never realized that mace is the red covering around the nutmeg seed. I learned that nutmeg can be made into an ointment that supposedly helps relieve pain from arthritis and gout. The tour ends with a demonstration of how the nutmeg is bagged and made ready for shipment to markets outside of Grenada. We did have a very good guide from the museum who led us through the nutmeg museum who explained each processing step and answered questions. Due to it being a holiday there were no workers in the museum attending to the various displays. Nutmeg products, even nutmeg oil ($12US), were for sale, but the many nutmegs in a bag were too much for me. As we left the building after 30 minutes, I noticed samples of the whole nutmeg as it looks before it is shelled. The only thing lacking was a real nutmeg tree with its seeds (there was a painting of such a tree, though in the museum showing how workers poke the nutmeg off the tree.)
This museum is in the town. It is not the Dougaldston Estate. With demonstrations, visitors could spend more than 30 minutes like we did at the museum, but on a ship excursion one has to go along with the timetable set by the tourguide.

We were on a cruise and pulled into St George's. I managed to escape the good lady and jumped onto a local public minibus. The cost was petty, the bus ride was fantastic, the scenery was amazing my companions were incredible. We arrived at Gouyave like it was the end of civilisation but unbelievable. The nutmeg factory was straight out of the days of piracy, the sites, sounds and smells were real spice Island genuine, unbeatable. The tow was great, what a waterfront, met another Englishman who was visiting his old papa's property, a disused cinema on maim Street. We had a great time. Unfortunately the river had destroyed the bridge so I couldn't get to the plantation but the bus back was better than a fairground ride. SUPER.

This tour was held at a museum in Victoria. No longer an active site but due to our tour guide and the way it was set out, it was thoroughly enjoyable and very inexpensive. We ended by buying some nutmeg, which will be great.

We planned on visiting the Gouyave Nutmeg Processing Plant and when we arrived (12/30/2022), we were told this plant no longer allows tours. You have to take a bus to Victoria, about 10 minutes away. It is on the same bus route so we went to the plant in Victoria and got a tour there.

Not a seek out stop, but ok as a quick pit stop. Tour is just $1 per person. Wouldn't spend more than 15 mins here. The place is very small and the tour guide was quite knowledgeable. The process is quite manual of drying, breaking, sorting, grading, and then packaging it. They have a shop where you can purchase nutmeg products and had clean toilets.

Tour is very inexpensive - $1 US per person. The employee that gave the tour was knowledgeable and very pleasant. You get a quick but thorough overview of the entirely manual process of drying, cracking, sorting, grading, and packing the nutmeg. You may get a peek at the ladies actually doing the work at the opposite end of the warehouse about 200 feet away. I learned more about nutmeg processing in Grenada from online texts, better visuals too. The warehouse smells divine.

Stopped on island tour. Hard to hear guide over background noise of women sorting nutmeg. Tour restricted to one small area, where nutmeg sorted. Clean toilets. Gift shop seemed pricey. No photography allowed.

Visite un peu courte. Informations difficiles à comprendre, car le guide parle vite et qu'il y a beaucoup de bruit. Quand même intéressant! Petite boutique à la sortie!

Grenada seems to be enjoying an economic boom from nutmegs. This was an old time plant but still interesting. We bought alot of nutmeg products here and also had nutmeg ice cream at dinner. Fun!

They are open from early morning to about 5 pm. If they are open they will arrange a tour for a group of individuals. They are closed on Sundays. Go into the gift shop and let the clerk know that you are interested in a tour and they will arrange the details with you.
