The ferry service has been very inconsistent and unreliable for months. I’ve had people tell me they had to wait, stuck in PEI at the terminal for 24 hours. The unreliability makes it impossible to use as a foot passenger. The bridge is an hour + away from the ferry. Someone who travels to Pictou or Antigonish now has to take a 4 hour trip instead of a 2 hour trip. The worst part is I can’t see my loved ones until the ferry opens up again.
Not to mention it’s in the constitution that islanders need a consistent and reliable way off the island. What happens if something happens to the bridge? Are we stranded????

We are taking the ferry from St John to Digby. The boat is very comfortable but we have been continuously trapped listening to live music we didn’t ask for. While waiting an hour and a half in the car waiting to board there was someone loudly playing the bagpipes. You can easily tell he isn’t really playing and it is jarring for all the time you are waiting to board the boat.
Then once we boarded the boat and got underway, a woman came out and started singing and playing the guitar. It isn’t that she is too bad but no one asked for this intrusion and most people moved. We would have moved but we liked our seats,
So our strong recommendation to the ferry line is to not subject people who are a trapped audience to music we don’t want. Thank god for noise canceling head phones!

Thank you for taking the time to post a review. We believe you were travelling on our sister service, Fundy Rose, travelling between Saint John, New Brunswick and Digby, Nova Scotia. We do offer music throughout the summer onboard and boarding at the Saint John terminal. We appreciate your feedback.

The ferry is a pleasant though unremarkable route to/from PEI - the only other driving route being the bridge of course. We went in over the bridge and back via the ferry since it put us closer to Cape Breton and as such, it probably worked out at the same price when adding bridge toll plus extra gas though no difference in the time.
They take reservations which, during peak season, you should do.
Other than that, a perfectly ordinary 75-minute ferry journey.

We decided to take the Northumberland Ferry to Nova Scotia instead of a second trip across the Confederation Bridge. Either way we were going to have to pay $50 for the bridge or about $90 for the Ferry. My recommendation is if you are traveling to PEI from the west, take the bridge to the island and leave by the ferry to experience both and save the most money.
The Ferry was close to our bed and breakfast and gave us much better views of the coastline than the bridge than the bridge would. We were unable to book ahead (highly recommend booking ahead); however, we decided to take a chance on getting on anyway. Fortunately we were able to make it. The ferry itself has a cafeteria on board as well and indoor/outdoor seating. It was a memorable part of our trip to eastern Canada.

Took the ferry both ways and it was such a smooth, safe, organized and pleasurable experience. Online booking is a breeze, just give confirmation # at booth and on you go. Lots of comfy seats, table and chairs, snack bar too. On way back to PEI there was a female duo singing and playing guitars for the riders, great mini concert. 75 minute ride is over in a blink of an eye.

We travelled both ways in late June 2024. The Confederation is the older ferry but perfectly comfortable and plenty of outdoor space to see the sights. Lunch menu was both varied and very reasonable. We returned on the newer ferry. It was very nice and very smooth. Much newer interior but less outdoor viewing space and less varied lunch menu. We were not aware of 'paying only one way' and had to suffer the long telephone wait time to get refunded for our double payments (we had booked and paid for two separate one way routes). Pleasant staff at check-in and on board. Would recommend.

If this is your first time taking the PEI ferry, let me assure you that they have made incredibly easy to get on board with your car. They are extremely well organized and efficient. Once parked, head upstairs to the upper decks either to enjoy the view or to grab something to eat at their quite large cafeteria. Given how busy summer travel is in the Maritimes, you would be wise to book your voyage in advance.

We took the Ferry at Caribou Nova Scotia to Wood Islands PEI. You don't have to pay for it when you go to the island but you need to pay when you leave PEI. We took the confederation Bridge back and paid before we got on the bridge. The ferry was fine and comfortable. They had some trouble getting our car on the upper deck area out and delayed us 45 minutes. Still we had a good experience and will do this again.

Good visitor centre after checking in for the crossing but only leaflets were ‘Welcome to PEI’, just as we were leaving …. and nothing at all about Nova Scotia, where we were headed.
No coffee machine either but you can buy coke.
Saw yet another lighthouse from the ferry and realised we would have had chance to visit.
Very efficient ticketing and boarding, really smooth crossing too on a comfortable ship.

Together with our coach, we rode on the Northumberland Ferry from Wood Islands to Pictou. The 75 minutes ride was tranquil and we stood throughout watching the sunset 🌇 and time passed by. Met a few passengers with their lovely dogs 🐕 🐕 🐕.
The roll on roll off ferry ⛴️ was huge but surprisingly not very crowded.
We enjoyed the ride!

I would double check with the ferry company to make sure, but my understanding is that the ferry does not run from January to March. According to a PEI tourism website that I checked, the ferry started operating this year on April 1, 2022, though I cannot say for sure when the ferry will start running in 2023.

We are planning on taking the ferry from NS to PEI on Sunday, Sept 4. I seen that it can be free on a first come first serve basis.
What's the likelihood of getting a free spot or should I just bite the bullet and book a reservation?
TIA.
Escrita el 24 de agosto de 2022
Hi! I will let the ferry company answer this question, but if I were you I would reserve, so you don't leave anything to chance. Enjoy your trip to PEI

If i plan to take the bridge onto the island and then the ferry off, would I just have to pay the $78 for the one way ferry fare?

What are the typical earliest and latest departures for ferry heading to PEI? It would be around August 2/3, 2022. Just a car and two guests if that is pertinent.

Ferry service departs all day from early morning to early evening. I would pre=book vehicle.

Hello, I'm curious what loads look like these days (october 2021) We're debating the necessity of making a booking or showing up early and chancing getting on without a reservation.
Escrita el 13 de octubre de 2021
Hi Chris, we pulled our 35 foot fifth wheel into the parking lot in Pictou with no reservation at the end of August and were able to get on at midday with a 45 minute wait though it was quite busy. We were surprised how few vehicles were waiting on the PEI side.
Remember that there is no charge travelling onto the island but getting off can be expensive. I doubt you would have a problem.

Hello,
Did you take the pictures of the lighthouses from the Ferry ? Thanks !
Escrita el 23 de julio de 2019
I would agree with another post. We could take photos from the ferry at a distance of the Wood Islands Lighthouse. You can walk to it and get better photos. If you get to the ferry about an hour early or more, you could get some photos. It's about a quarter-mile/half a mile to the lighthouse from the parking area. Alternatively, if you are coming from NS, you could stay after your ride to take photos.

Hi all.
We hope to take the ferry from Caribou NS to PEI on Monday July 29, 2019 one way only (return via bridge). What do you think the odds are that we will get on without a reservation? We will be aiming for the 16:30 crossing, with the 18:00 as our back up (or may just drive to the bridge if we miss both crossings).
Escrita el 7 de julio de 2019
We were able to get a one-way reservation going from Wood Island to Caribou. It may be different in peak season. I would risk the wait. It's a lovely area to explore. We took the bridge in. On the way out, you will have to pay the bridge toll ( on the way in it's free), so we opted for paying for the ferry on the way out of PEI. But your plans may be taking you in another direction and not back to NS.

How busy does the ferry from NS to PEI get in the summer?
Do we need a reservation for a Sunday crossing?
What is the one-way fare, since we plan on taking the Confederation Bridge from PEI to Moncton, NB.
Thanks

I traveled in September and it wasn't busy. I would imagine that July and August would be busy. Book way in advance.

From my understanding, you can book a time for a one way trip from Nova Scotia to PEI for $78, or you can book round trip and still pay the same total price of $78.
Let''s say, you reserve a time by ferrie from NS to PEI (cost of $78 one way) and you come back via the Confederation bridge, do you still have to pay the additional $46 to leave via the bridge?
Escrita el 28 de julio de 2018
We took the ferry and the bridge back. Unless you get to the ferry very early you may not make it on and have to wait until the next one.
The bridge is quite a long detour. It is long and, despite what is commented below, kind of pretty, especially on the PEI drive there.
If you don't want to chance it and are going back to Nova Scotia take the ferry both ways. We went to New Brunswick, so getting to the ferry early and taking the bridge back worked out well. Plus it only cost the bridge toll.
Escrita el 28 de julio de 2018
If I use the bridge one way and the ferry the other what are the fares? I know the bridge is paid when leaving the island. How does the ferry work? Is there a $78 fee both ways?
Escrita el 23 de julio de 2018
No. You only pay when leaving the Island. If you leave the Island via the ferry the fare is around $78 for a passenger car. Leaving via the bridge is about $45.
We recently travelled to PEI from Nova Scotia on the ferry. So, our fare was zero from Nova Scotia to PEI. But, the concern is there was no guarantee you would get on the ferry because you can't make one-way reservations. If you plan to use the ferry to access PEI both ways, then you can make reservations for both ways, but the fare would be $78.
