This location is Not permanently closed. It is a thriving and active place to wander in nature. The correct website is conesteepreserve.org, it is a volunteer run, charity organization dedicated to preserving this natural space and making it accessible to everyone.

We really enjoyed this park, the sheer number of different trails on top of the Swamp Rabbit Trail running through it is impressive. I do agree with some of the other comments that there was trash around. We didn’t see a lot but sadly some plastic bottles, bass and other containers were around. Once a day pass through to take the trash out would help, or people could just stop littering (shrug). Lots of pretty areas and wildlife to see so don’t skip this one.

A beautiful mesmerizing place though tons of trash and pollution in certain spots. I’ve spent many days wandering and exploring the preserve with my dog over the years. It was a slap in the face to those of us who’ve supported them for years to suddenly have our dogs banned for no reason. Yes, Dogs are still allowed on the paved road that runs through the middle—a brilliant move to restrict dogs to hot pavement— but it’s just not the same place when you’re not allowed on the real trails. If I wanted to walk my dog on paved roads, I can do that at home in my neighborhood. If they were genuinely concerned for the wildlife, they’d clean up the piles and piles of trash that accumulate around the river and wetlands instead of banning leashed, well-behaved dogs. With the relentless blows 2020 had to offer, the park management doing this was cruel and so unnecessary. 5 stars for the land, 0 stars for the management.

Used to enjoy this park on a regular basis. Attractive, convenient place for a trail run or family walk. Then they banned leashed well behaved dogs on the natural trails. Management has done a great job alienating supportive and responsible users.

Walked from main entrance across river-otter bridge and to conestee dam. Lots of water fowl and a great blue heron at the heron spur. Two large Pileated woodpeckers and another heron at South Bay. Lots of other birds easy to spot when the leaves have fallen. Some migrate here beginning in December. Winter terrain is interesting. Take binoculars. Ongoing investment in this park makes it as good as Congaree National Park in Columbia. But without the alligators.

Having a beautiful day to hike in Lake Conestee Nature Park is a bonus, but you can have an awesome experience here at any time! There are numerous trails, interconnected, that are teeming with nature. Lots of beech, maple, and hickory trees throughout the forest that keep this walker’s paradise cool. And, lots of places to see water too. A number of boardwalks allow visitors to cross swampy waterways hosting a number of turtles and larger birds. The trails, for the most part, are flat. One major walkway is paved and wide enough for folks to cross paths and not feel cramped. Other connector trails are a mix of dirt / rock / and boardwalk...all maintained well...no fallen logs / trees. And, the trails are mostly flat...very little slope. Learning Loops give visitors the chance to understand a bit more of the history of the area, and, of course, the nature within the preserve. Highly recommend this area.

Free (requested $3 donation). Playground, restrooms, dog park, large greenspace and lots of trails. Main paved multi-use trail for bikes, dogs, people, strollers etc. Mainly flat. Boardwalks and hiking trails branching off. Basically they all wind around back to the paved trails. Lots of observation decks. Great for all ages and easy trails.

Well designed and maintained trails. Interesting side branches provide lots of flexibility for distances. Bridges cross streams and also the reedy river. Wooden towers that you can climb to sit and watch most of the terrain from above. Good for walking or biking.

This is a real gem in the Greenville area. Very peaceful and calm area, The trails are well maintain and with the map I printed off website-had no problems finding my way. Had a family picnic. The lakes and creeks are a joy to observe. The builds were diverse and plentiful. Loved watching the turtles.. We walked slow and felt relaxed. Good size place with a lot of trails--not crowded when we visited on a Saturday. Loved the boardwalks and bridges. Free, but donations are greatly appreciated. Well worth a donation to keep this wonderful treasure maintained

I am a store manager which means I have a very stressful job indeed. So on my days off, I usually try to spend it outdoors when ever possible. So a few weeks ago I decided to head to the nature preserve.
Lake Conestee Nature Preserve consists of more than 400 areas of beauty. It sits along 3 miles of the Reedy River. It consists of hardwoods, evergreen forest. And wetlands. Part of the Swamp Rabbit Trail runs here. This is a great learning venture for the kids as they have numerous learning loops placed along the trail. Part of the trail is open to bikes and dogs while parts of it remains foot traffic only.
I pull up and immediately start snapping pictures right away. I then head to the boardwalk and let my adventure begin. There are trees everywhere offering a respite from the SC heat. I step up on one of the first observation decks as I spy two beautiful Huron and I'm being quite so I can observe and photograph them. My tranquil moment is interrupted by screaming banshees. And just like that my moment is ruined by two screaming brats and a mom who is more concerned about taking pictures of her offspring rather than the beauty that surrounded her. And the preserve limits the space where dogs can be in order not to upset the children. How about limits on children so Im not upset? All of the dogs I passed were well behaved.
Anyhoo..I venture on. This part of the trail along the lake is well paved and smooth and accessible to anyone. As I venture on I come to a bridge and decide to take that. The bridge is gorgeous and leads to River Otter Way. This part of the trail is for walking only and dogs are not allowed. It is also not handicap accessible. This takes you deeper into the forest and the trails are not paved. I take my time here and just soak all of this beauty in. I am in heaven here. My favorite part was the west bay observation deck which overlooks a lake and the views here will leave you speechless. Wildlife abounds here. On this day I spot so many birds from huge to tiny. Dragonflies, squirrels, sunning Turtles, and chipmunks are spotted along my travels. I also spot a frog that is smaller than a dime. I almost step in it so I skootch it to the grass so it doesn't get stepped on.
The nature preserve sits beside what was once the River Reedy Factory. This historical building is now for sale and would make a wonderful mixed use complex. You can also observe the dam from here. Though I have no idea of how you get to the dam though I see people out there.
This is the part that confused me. Nearby is the Conestee Park. It consists of a sports complex, shelters, a dog park, and a war memorial. And even possibly a trail that connects to the nature preserve. But every thing I can see, the two are somehow connected. I mean when you pull up the website both parks are on that. Yet when I posted a picture of a statue outside of the dog park and posted it to my Instagram account and mentioned they were connected. I received a rude post informing me that they were in no way connected and to remove the nature preserve hashtag! So be careful what you post!
There is plenty of parking here and its free. They do offer picnic benches here. Just please clean up after yourself along the way. The rules of the preserve are clearly posted so please follow them. Again parts of this is accessible and offer plenty for those in wheelchairs.
So when you need to get-away and unwind for a while. This is the perfect place to do it.

Does anyone have a map that ONLY SHOWS WHERE CRUISER BIKES CAN GO in Connestee? I have been on a bike while my wife walked, and we have gotten to several places where there was no way to get back to where our car was without reversing direction, causing the person walking to hike another 2-3 miles. Thanks!

Signs posted recently limit bikes to the swap rabbit paved portion of the preserve.

Absolutely! Some trails are limited to foot traffic, but it's connected to the Swamp Rabbit Trail so there are many routes open to bikes.
