My father designed this church in the early 60. A hyperbolic parabaloid roof. Way ahead of its time. The windows and light reflections are beautiful. Now a library, I am glad it has been put to use as opposed to being demolished.

This beautiful library is such a pleasure to go to. An ex Church it is so serene. The staff are very friendly and helpful and I set up an online book borrowing facility. So much to do there and great community spirit.

Once a Dominican church, now the town library.
I recall the passionate arguments and divided opinions when the futuristic design was disclosed to worshippers of the old Dominican church. It was seen as 'something that you'd see in an Asian country'. In architectural terms, it is now regarded as an example of brutalistic architecture that was in vogue in the 1960's and it was complete with an hyperbolic parabaloid roof. I recall opening day in 1965, one of many standing, unable to secure a seat, crowded with both worshippers and those that came along to see this strange church. At that time, the Dominican Order had served the Athy community since 1257, over 700 years little did anyone think that the last mass would be celebrated there a short 50 years later and the church deconsecrated. The last remaining part of the previous church still remains, a not too high tower with hand operated bell atop.
It's good to see that the building has been assumed by the local council. It has been attractively renovated and a modern library fit-out installed and will continue to contribute to the cultural heritage of the town and surrounding districts.
