It's hard to rate this one.
As the plaque outside says it was built by Talbot, the Viceroy of Ireland in 1417 to ensure safe passage over what was then a new bridge over the river.
But unfortunately it is not use. Such a pity as its a perfect site for a museum or gallery or somesuch standing as it does over the water and bridge.
It's such a historic building, so stately and venerable that any visitor to Athy will be drawn to it as we were, but that's it. You'll be drawn to it... but not into it.

You will find Whites Castle and Crom-a Boo Bridge beside each other and both beatiful in there own right.

The castle and bridge date to 1417, built by Sir John Talbot. The bridge is believed to have been a wooden structure and probably replaced a similar structure from early Norman Times. The castle was built to afford protection of the bridge and local inhabitants. The histories of both have been intertwined since these early days and as a local student I learned of the various families that inhabited the castle and their place in Irish society. The castle was not built as the grand edifice it is today. The early building was a rectangular tower built over four levels. In 1802 the castle was extended and the battlements added to facilitate it's use as a prison after the 1798 rebellion. A small extension was added in 1836 when it became a police barracks. The entire building was renovated in 1872 and in 1894 it became a private residence again for descendants of the Talbot family. It has passed into various ownerships in recent times and I understand has been largely unoccupied since 2012. A wonderful landmark in the town and even better if taken over by the State and preserved for future generations similar to other historic sites throughout the country.

The present bridge dates to 1796 and there is an inscribed stone which reads "Crom~a~Boo Bridge, First Stone Laid By His Grace, Wm Robt Duke of Leinster, 23rd May 1796. Contracter Sir James Deleunty, Knight of the Trowel".
Not much is known about the bridge that it replaced but possibly a bridge built in 1530 to replace the 1417 Talbot bridge. One thing hasn't changed since my days as a student, the narrow bridge still causes traffic bottlenecks.
