Received a warm welcome from Sinead who was very informative. We started by watching 4 short films which were very interesting before beginning our walk around. We had a particular interest in the Shackleton exhibit but the museum also has exhibits on the Gordan Bennett Race and WW1.All so very interesting. Spent some time here and actuallly went for lunch and returned to complete our tour. Well done to all involved and we look forward to the extension planned and the housing in the musuem of the renovated cabin - - the 'sea bedroom' where Ernest Shackleton died of a heart attack in 1922 .

This was impressive. Really nice staff; very helpful. Great exhibits and interesting films. Check their hours. We had a 2:00 tour booked and had a delicious piece of pie right next dor while we waited for them to open.

We had a great morning in the Shackleton Museum in Athy Heritage Centre.
The staff were fantastic and it being Heritage Week entry was free, though the normal cost of €5 would be cheap at the price for the rich experience you get.
There is a model of Shackleton's expeditionary ship, his actual harness for the dogs to pull his sledge. There's even one last biscuit from one of his expeditions behind glass on the wall!!!
There are some of his medals, possessions and a letter he wrote to fellow Antarctic explorer Tom Crean. It's a fantatic treasure trove of memorabilia and curios.
The Museum also has a section on the local WW1 soldiers, the 1798 Rebellion in the area, the role of the canal in the development of Athy, the local Quakers from Athy and Ballytore, many of whom were Shackleton's ancestors and family, and the general history of settlement the area.
There are 4 short films shown at the start abiutbthe canal, WW1, Shackleton abd the Gordon Bennett rally, the first road race for cars in Ireland and how it came to be in Athy.
The Museum is self guided and booking ahead is essential in these covid times as numbers are limited in each time slot.
There is a brilliantly crafted statue of Shackleton outside too.
Huge plans to renovate and extend into the upper floor of the building and Shackleton's expeditionary hut is currently being restored with a view to display.
A fantastic Museum, absolutely fascinating.

Great little museum with a wealth of artefacts in the the Shackleton exhibition .It is so well laid out with and gives a great insight into both his exploits and personal life .Definitely a must see for anyone with an interest in Antarctic explorations .
Also the audio visual introduction to The Grand canal,Gordon Bennett Race and WW1 gives a succinct account of these events in the community.
The staff were very pleasant and helpful and is a little gem to visit .

I understood that this was a 'Shackelton' museum, but his memorabilia is only about a quarter of the artifacts on display, good stuff, but not what I expected.

This gem is well worth a visit. We were lucky enough to see the Shackleton Exhibition and had a wonderful talk by KEVIN KENNY - all the staff were lovely. Great photos of soldiers at War, many medals on display. Quite poignant, as my Grandad came from nearby and would have fought alongside many of those who did not return.
Enjoy the Exhibition - well worth a visit and the Staff have a passion for their work.

We always visit this museum when returning to Athy to see the Shackleton exhibition and any additions to this and other displays. I understand that it is the only permanent exhibition devoted to Shackleton and not commonly known to visitors to the country. Great interest in the "Exploring Shackleton Exhibition" and the bonus of exhibits for Gordon Bennett, the Great Famine, and much more. Staff are enthusiastic, friendly and never seem hassled even when busy. If you want the guided tour, the Centre recommends that you make an advance booking, I'll know next time.

The museum currently has a Shackleron Exhibition on until 1 March and has some great artefacts of his explorations. This is a little gem of a museum and Jack the curator was a mind of information and greeted us like life long friends. He even offered us a cuppa as we had traxelled two hours to visit the museum. They have plans to extend and refurbish over the next year and we will definitely return in a year or two to attend the Shackleton seminars. Details of exhibitions etc on their website. Hope we find Jack still there he is what makes Ireland worth a visit.

being a big fan of Ernest Shackleton's explorations, I knew this was someplace I had to stop on our trip and I was not disappointed. The staff was so warm and helpful and the small display area so well laid out and presented I was pleasantly surprised. Leaned some about Ireland & the Athy area's WW1 history and about the religious history of the area. Also was introduced to the Gordon Bennett auto race which I had never heard of but hope to learn more about now. The permanent exhibit of Shackleton items and history is very well done for a small museum and justifies a visit if a Shackleton fan or not. Beautiful photography, exquisite model of his ship Endurance and interesting artifacts give details of his career. and the fantastic statue outside is the icing on the cake. Recommended.
