There was no cost for this gem, only a donation requested. The film on "The Burning" was interesting and the mural on the wall was great. Susan was quite knowledgeable and could answer our questions. We also took advantage of good weather and did part of the walk around the battlefield.

This small, historic museum is just wonderful. Admission is only $5 bucks, which allows access to the entire museum, as well as the small theater room, where they'll show several different Civil War films, and a few extras if you ask. The staff is always friendly and knowledgeable, and will answer most every question you have. It's especially interesting to know that many of these battles took place just outside the doors, up the road, around the bend, and all over the Shenandoah Valley. They feature a Civil War camp replica, various weapons, uniforms, posters, battle flags and more. Be sure to visit their gift shop too! This is the perfect way to spend a rainy afternoon!

Very informative person at the museum. There's a 45 minute movie too but we didn't watch it. We did walk the trail located on the grounds. Very nice trail with markers.

I was trying to understand the Battle order for Cedar Creek and was recommended to visit this site in Strasburg. The woman manning the museum that day was Very helpful about local things to do and we visited the local museum which explains the Battle events with a great topographical diorama map. The collection of objects found and donated by locals is one of the largest I have ever seen with thousands of mini balls, pistols, rifles, swords and objects of a personal nature dropped by troops on both sides.

We drove in only for the Virginia visitors center, to get some general information since we were staying nearby and didn't take the time to check out the grounds or the museum. The woman working in the center was fantastic with suggestions, brochures, maps, event schedules etc.. on just about everything you could think of. We will make sure to check out the rest on a return visit.

From the lady historian, enthusiast about her job, to the orginal mural done by a local art teacher a joy to visit. A detailed exhibit of the battle and times. If u get a brief tour from the guide it help since there is much to read. Very informative. And the Mural is beautifully done. Subtle in color giving it and aged look. Very nice.

The battle was fought between Conf. Gen. Jabul Early & Union Gen. Philip Sheridan October 13, 1864. Although the confederate army took Gen. Sheridan by surprise, the day ended with a strong union counterattack & victory. Federal losses were 22 killed, 110 wounded & 77 captured, while confederate lost 22 killed & 160 wounded. The battle occurred six days before the larger Battle of Cedar Creek.

The present battlefield is at most one acre with no cannons or even a small memorial from either combatant. On the grounds are at least 'How Strata Shaped Strategy-how the lay of the land figured how the battle was fought. Two info stands about Crystal Caverns & how the cavern's minerals were used in the making of gunpowder. On e blue stand is Hupp's Hill-The Battle of Hupp's Hill or Stickley's Farm. One walking trail has historical information about both the French & Indian War (1754-1763) & and the Civil War. Didn't have time for the trail, so have no information what a visitor may encounter.

The visitor center.
The outside has the look of a log cabin. Never learned the staff's woman. My first words were "This facility is difficult to locate'. Apparently other visitors have made the same comment as she replied 'Yes I know'. If not using a GPS unit, look for a large brown sign that says 'Hupp's Hill Civil War Park' with the words in smaller letters Shenandoah Visitor Center & Strasburg Museum at the bottom. The center has all kinds of books, brochures,, maps & large civil war paintings suitable for frame.

The museum.
Admission is $5.00 with children under 10 free. Exhibits are camp life-two union soldiers-home front, glass cases containing weapons, army supplies, bullets. Along one wall is a mural-in the neighborhood of 110 feet in length, from the attack of Fort Sumter to General Lee's signing his surrender at Appomattox with a total of 14 connecting sections. Also is a raised replica of the Battle of Cedar Creek build for a war college which was donated to museum when the replica was no longer needed.
The mural-in my opinion-is the museum's most outstanding exhibit.

The museum was excellent-educational & interesting-visitor center good while the battlefield ok-depending what a visitor maybe looking for.
Hours for the visitor center & museum are Monday-Sunday 9:00-5:00. A small parking lot is available.

With the battlefield-only a small section of the actual battlefield-the visitor center, & museum are not be missed. During my stop only 4-5 other visitors. In the wooded area are four wooden benches, six stone benches & four picnic tables.

A visit is recommended. My visit lasted about two hours at most.

Not a major attraction, of course, but our family really enjoyed it.
We spent an easy two + hours and will return, having moved to Winchester. . Impressive set of artifacts. Nicely informed walk of the setting, and military tactics. Significant topographical features: caves, sinkholes, elevation, obvious reinforced gun sites.

It has been nicely upgraded. Military buffs of Civil War should surely not bypass it.

Shaded picnic tables. No fee - I put a few bucks in the jar. Lady is not a guide, but knows the area. Knob Hill, etc.
