The cliffs are nice to look at from Shipwreck Beach. The trail from the beach to the top of the cliffs is not too difficult. The view of the ocean and the beach is very nice from the top.
We had our only while sighting while in Kauai from the top of the cliffs. Warning: some unwise people actually jump from these cliffs despite the warning signs. Don't watch.

Worthwhile unless it's very windy. Not difficult and you get nice views and unusual experience. Also very close to the Makauwahi Cave which is worth a visit too so you can do both in <1 hour if time is short.

Easy hike with ocean views and some sandy beach areas. Only caution is watch out on the golf course since the golfers are hitting balls near the trail.

We took the Mahaulepu trail along the beach to get here. The sun was intense so we took the road back and cut off at least an hour. The cave itself was really cool and it was a lot of fun to go out and see the tortoises after.

Beautiful sights everywhere you look! You can do as much or as little walking and hiking as you prefer and still see breathtaking views. We walked and hiked several miles along the shoreline and golf course marveling at the beauty. Multiple terrains included rocks, packed dirt, sand and some loose rock. Trails weren’t always obvious so you can meander along and find multiple ways around. Some trails are used by horses as well.

Wear a hat and bring lots of water to do the 7+ mile hike from the Hyatt. We like the hike in the morning before the sand gets too hot and powdery.

WOW! Great views! Easy trails (I even did this in flip flops but was careful on the small climb up) there were many Sea turtles! There were lots of crab if you look close. Every turn offered a new and amazing view.

It is a nice walk along the coast with awe-inspiring beauty. I did it with my 8 and 10 year old and it was a bit slippery because of rains but nothing that we couldn't manager

Easy walk/hike, beautiful views at the end. If you go at low tide, you can walk further onto the cliffs. It got a bit scary there, with the waves/wind/elements. Very primal feeling. We were alone on this trail, saw another family coming in as we were walking out. Peaceful.

Excellent trail but can get a bit bumpy (rocks n'such) depending on what path you follow. Good for kids too (5+). Bring water, a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen, but hold on to your hat!! Most of the trail is in direct sunlight. If you get far enough to see the golf course, you've done very well and may want to consider turning around. But.... if your goal is to get to get to the Makauwahi Cave Reserve you've still got a bit of a ways to go! You will continue past the golf course and when you see CJM Stables you will continue walking along the cliffs of Mahaulepu Beach until you see the trail to the cave. From the stables the trail entrance is about 5 minutes away, but then another 5-10 to actually get to the cave. So basically, if you have made it to the stables then you might as well finish. If you still want to see the cave but continuing along this trail is too much, no worries! Turn around when you see the golf course to head back. Then hop in your car and drive to Mahaulepu Beach, park and walk in from there to see the cave. :)

Where is the starting point for this trail and can you actually go into the caves?

The trail head begins at Shipwreck Beach. You can go into the caves but that is a special tour which I believe has a fee associated with it.

Would this be possible with kids aged 4 & 7?

Yes, absolutely. It is more an area to explore than a linear path. You could go as long or short as they are up for but there are rocks to climb, and inlets with sleeping seals. Like everything with younger kids, it’s not the same hike you’d take on your own but very enjoyable.
