I was looking for a "not touristy" beach with clear calm water to swim. Well, this beach is not touristy, the water is calm and looks clear. But ... There are a lot of homeless people who took over the beach park. Garbage and the smell of human excrement are dominating the whole beach experience. In general it looks like all west beaches after Ko'Lina became homeless encampments.

The positive: it has the clearest water out there, you can see all the way to the ground
It’s a beach used by the locals and the military (they have cabins to rent). There is a bathroom that is decently clean (I observed everywhere there are Japanese tourists (not there) they throw the used toilet paper on the ground, probably believing the plumbing cannot handle it. Pearl Harbor was particularly nasty).
The negative: the whole upper west side beaches are overtaken by homeless people. There are whole villages made up of tents and pallets. They seemed friendly enough though, but it is telling that they reside mostly on the (relatively) poor side of the island. There are also some local gangs in that area, so I don’t know how welcoming they are to haole (white) people.
Cost of living is extremely high in Hawaii without salaries supporting these costs, and outside of Waikiki and the touristy areas the social problems become visible.
We were there with a local family, who told us about these issues.

Our first time there and it was a pleasant experience. The history behind Ku’ilioloa Heiau was explained and the maintenance crew is all voluntary.
We’ve lived on Oahu and return often but this was the first time we’ve seen the Hawaiian Monk Seal.
Don’t miss the newly opened Pokai Bay Restaurant across the road. Their Homemade Ice Cream is the best.

I drive here from Waikiki. Not the most beautiful of beaches but it does have a certain charm. The water is calmer than other beaches and there is plenty of wildlife. Sea turtles swim nearby as do Monk Seals. The beach is not a tourist destination and visited mostly by locals. My wife likes this beach because it isn't touristy and the water is calmer. . The number one down fall are the bathrooms. They smell like the NYC subway system circa 70's-80's. ( heavy urine smell) Unlike the NYC subway system, the bathrooms still smell like urine. (I visited in 2018 with the same foul smell). It's still worth the ride from Waikiki.

Absolutely loved this beach. This is not a touristy kinda beach. Mostly locals and yes, the restrooms are overly used but you can always use the bathrooms at the nearby restaurant. Never felt unsafe. Loved the calm waters, friendly people and all of the turtles. So many turtles. This was our go-to beach most every day. Great snorkeling and swimming spot. Would highly recommend for those who are avoiding the crowded tourist beaches and big waves.

We spent the better part of a day at this beach. The area is easy to access for elderly people. The water and surf were gentle enough that it then did not knock my 81-year-old mother over. It’s a great place for kids for the very same reason.

I’m born and raised leeward side... Ewa Beach, Nanakuli, Waianae. For the tourists this is not a good beach for you probably because it’s more locals friendly. Plenty homeless and ur gonna think bad things like the bathrooms stink and are gross and stuff. But we locals are stoked with this beach 🏖 so killer brah. Gorgeous and great sealift. Funny to watch beginner surfing lessons too but everyone was a beginner once so Hang loose 🤙🏼

The bay is mostly protected from the ocean and paddling here is very calm. Great turquoise waters and sandy beach. This part of the island has a lot of homeless people, so the parking lots and public washrooms can be sketchy. Use the facilities at the Beach House restaurant and enjoy food & drinks there. tHis is not a must go to destination, but it is very nice.

The breakwater makes family swimming safe. It is also near the Army Rec center beach which offers good beginner surfing most of the time. Get there early to see the dolphins when they come by. Snorkel to see the turtles.

基本軍の人が利用する施設のため、車ではゲート中には入れません。入り口でIDをみせ手前のパーキングに停めます。ビーチの面積は狭いですが、人が少なくのんびりできていいです。

How long do we have to wait to get a permit or can we apply for one now or do we have to wait a month before our function or wait a couple of weeks before it happens?
Escrita el 13 de marzo de 2023
Do you need a permit to have a pick nick at Pokai bay beach?
Escrita el 5 de octubre de 2018
No. Every weekend all of the leeward coast beaches are well populated by local families enjoying bbq’s etc. and there would be a riot if someone said that a permit was required.
Respect the locals and they will respect you and you’ll have a great time!
