Barrio: Harlem

This was my first visit to the Schomburg, although I have been to NY a few times before. We thoroughly enjoyed the Afro Futurism Comics exhibit. Our personal tour guide was new, but she was knowledgeable and one of the more experienced gentlemen filled in the gaps when needed. In case you didn't know part of Langston Hughes' ashes are beneath the rivers of Africa design in the floor of the entrance leading to the exhibits. We did not have a chance to see the research center or the auditorium because there were classes of young people occupying them. Long live Arthur Schomburg!

This is primarily a place for community and for research, but they do have a couple of exhibit halls. When I went there was an exhibit on abolitionism and on the history of black travel. They were both excellent! They were well organized, visually stimulating, and colorful. Also very informative. The staff were also wonderful and helpful, very welcoming and available for questions. There were so many unique artifacts and documents, paintings, photos etc. Some examples include rare books and postcards written by Malcolm X. The Malcolm X postcards really offered a look into his personal travels. This is a wonderful place for people of all colors (especially white people) to learn about our history and what black people have gone through.

I can't count the number of times that I've visited the Schomburg - I went regularly when I lived in Brooklyn - but this was my first visit in a few years and both exhibits ( Traveling While Black: A Century of Pleasure & Pain & Pilgrimage, and Subversion & The Art of Slavery Abolition) were informative.

The Schomburg is bang opposite 135 St Station so easy to get to. I am soo happy that I visited it.
Langton Hughes' ashes are buried on the ground floor with a mosaic of the rivers to depict his most famous poem. Very, very informative museum above and one can't help feel so proud of the contribution of African Americans yet sad and angry that this is not celebrated acknowledged and taught enough. Every racist white American should visit it... might help him see the people he despises in a new light
There are clean washrooms and water fountains which are blessings. The staff is friendly, informed and willing to help. The gift shop has a great array of books by black authors(Yay!), tee shirts, bags and a few souvenirs that were too expensive in mho.

This center, which is part of the NY Public Library, is a veritable goldmine for anyone interested in black history and culture. It was the starting point for a tour of Harlem I had signed up for. An internet search for directions to the center perked my interest so much so that I arrived an hour earlier just so I could spend some time discovering this amazing place in the heart of Harlem. I was fortunate to see a special exhibit on Martin Luther King titled Crusader, which had extraordinary photos of Mr. King's visit to India and his acceptance of the Nobel Prize in Oslo. Schomberg Center has so much to offer through its awesome library, exhibits, talks and educational programs. NYC is blessed to have this center.

Whether its geology research or history and culture This is the place to visit in NY for all interested in Black History and Culture . Located in Harlem. Before we had genetic ancestry we had the Schomburgh. In addition to material there are great exhibits and works by some of the great writers and activist in our history in America.

This is a must see if you're in Harlem. Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Black Power Movement this exhibit showcases some of the most influential figures in the Black community during the movement. There's another exhibit called the Lost Chapters and Manuscripts of the Autobiography of Malcom X. Really had a great experience and the Staff are very friendly too.

I've been waiting for years to visit the Schomburg. I was not dissapointed. This library/museum fulfilled everything I thought about it and more. It is a beautiful rendition of the work that Schomburg was trying to accomplish during his life. I loved the library collection, the shop, and the museum had wonderful exhibits--the Black Power exhibit was especially satisfying. I cannot wait to visit Schomburg in the future.
