Our group of 4 love escape rooms and do them in just about every city we visit. We chose to try Breakout Waikiki’s Patient 57 room during our family vacation.
The experience was fun overall, but seemed poorly designed. It felt like the room creator accidentally bulk ordered four digit padlocks and had to come up with puzzles for them all. This meant that, despite there being a lot of cool and creative puzzles, they all took a similar form and were easy to mix up with another. This thing has numbers, and so does this thing, oh and this thing…. And now we have a four digit code, yay!! Try it on all 5 available locks real quick to see what that random puzzle was for in the first place.
There were also several puzzles that had pieces locked behind multiple other puzzles, but the pieces had no indication that you were still missing elements. This meant it was easy to burn time trying to solve a puzzle you weren’t ready for because it seemed you had everything.
Another issue we faced were some general maintenance issues. At a couple points my team successfully solved a puzzle but thought we must had made a mistake simple because the new unlock did not open properly or lacked any indication that something had changed.
Our guide was fairly apathetic and was very quick to give unprompted clues. I feel this is indicative that they have seen many people run headfirst into these design issues and aren’t sure what to do about them. I hope management can step in to make improvements. Some really simple things would go a long way to make this a top notch escape experience. Unique puzzle solutions (not just 4 digit codes), indicators like colored lights for when elements change, and ensuring it is obvious when elements are missing and/or do not belong together. With these changes I think everyone would have a much better time together.

The rooms (we did 3 rooms over 3 days) were fun and challenging. Our group has done over 30 escape rooms and these were some of the more creative rooms we had experienced. We really enjoyed Armory Ambush. The hosts for the rooms were also super helpful when we needed it. Because this is an independent escape room, and not part of a franchise, the concepts and games were unique and had local elements embedded in them. Just go already! :)

Soooo much fun we had to do another room. I love the quality of the clues. It makes sense and it's not all over the place, there's a system. The game rooms just keep on going. Our game keeper Bryan was da best! He was so funny and so helpful! Def coming back!

Got scheduled for the wrong date, but luckily they still had the room we signed up for open at the time we wanted. We did the Y2K. Online it says it’s 7/10 and there is ones that are harder, but when we asked at the location they said it was the hardest room and it was very challenging, especially for two people. We failed, (we have only failed one other time and we have done lots of rooms), but we were close though. The theme was awesome. I just wanted to dance to the music and it brought back memories to my husband and I since we were teens during the actual Y2K. Youngsters won’t understand the room like the older generations.

My husband and I plan a yearly trip with our teenage grandkids and we always include a local escape room. It’s a fun activity for all of us and we always look forward to it. Breakout Waikiki was the best experience so far. I REALLY appreciate that the guides help you and root for you to win. We ended up coming back and doing 3 different rooms. The rooms are all very challenging, but not overwhelming. And, the rooms are private so we didn’t have to worry about strangers joining us. It made for a truly memorable experience!

We visited Breakout Escape while on vacation. We are a family of four with two teens. We've done about 160 escape rooms. We were able to do 3 rooms - Y2K, Patient 57 and Secret Sabotage. We probably preferred Patient 57 and Amory Ambush - there were both more of a 3rd generation escape rooms - very few if any keys and locks. Y2K room had a lot of locks (maybe it was more like the times???) We did like the old time decorations and how it was used in the game.
If you haven't done an escape room before, it's like a 3D puzzle, with many different types of puzzles. You never know if you'll get something like a cross word, fill in the words, sudoko, or many, many other unique to game type puzzles. You are not truely locked in in most rooms, it's just on your honor. If it's your first escape game, definitely let your game master know since there are hints and nudges the game master can provide to help with your first room. It's also good to start with the easiest escape room (or highest escape rate room). Hopefully, we can get back to Hawaii and do the other rooms. Great experience. This place is located right in the middle of the mall area, right near Wakiki beach. Not far from a lot of restaurants.

The breakout room was so much fun, it was the perfect amount of difficulty to playing. The guy who checked us in gave very clear directions and was so excited for us to participate. We had such a fun time together figuring out all the puzzles and we escaped with 1 second to spare, we will definitely be going again soon.

We did the Heroes room, and it was a brand new experience for us. In spite of a couple of hiccups (one of our locks didn't work/wasn't reset, the room wasn't very "accessible" so my parents weren't able to participate in half of the challenge), we enjoyed this activity and would likely go again at some point.
I would just ask ahead of time for an experience that would fit the accessibility of your group ahead of time before booking a specific activity.
The staff at the Breakout was very helpful and made the experience fun for us, for sure.

I set up two rooms for the day so when we got there we finished up paying for the first room and the wait was a few minutes, if that. First one was Amory Ambush it was tough for a duo and we didn’t get to finish so we left in between. Came back to do Patient 57 and we completed it. It was a very fun experience and the workers were very kind and friendly. Would’ve done more rooms if possible.

Aloha Betty,
The rules are simple, you have 60 minutes to solve the puzzles, unlock clues, and put it all together to breakout in time! It’s hard to say anything more without giving away some of the fun, but the overall guidelines are as follows:
-everything you need is in the room
-you won’t need to pick locks or break anything open
-your phone won’t be necessary to solve the puzzles
-you will need to work together with your team if you want to breakout
-if you get stuck, you’ll have three free clues that you can use at anytime
Our Staff will always keep an eye on you so we can help out! If you have any other questions or concerns, feel free to call us at 808-926-1418. Mahalo!

Aloha! We did some checking and it appears that the review cannot be edited once it's submitted. Instead it has to be deleted and then resubmitted with the changes. Hope this helps!
