We stayed at this guesthouse during the peak season of Chinese New Year. The owners are great people who are very friendly and helpful, the rooms are beautiful, particularly the sea-view suite. I did not find the beds uncomfortable (nor did my picky elderly American parents) and while the bathrooms were not perfect, they were up to local standards. I would stay here again without a doubt.
This place is just plain awful and we couldn’t wait to escape it as soon as we could. The previous reviews are completely misleading as we’ve traveled across China and this rates as one of the worst places we’ve stayed in. Also, the photos and descriptions of the guesthouse are deceptive – cleverly disguising a run-down, drab, and depressing hostel. Claims to be ‘recently renovated’ are a mystery as there is no sign of recent maintenance or upkeep of the premises. My husband & I decided to split our time in Dali between the old town and lakeside village North Caicun. Based on the glowing online reviews on a few websites we pre-booked 3 nights in the deluxe double room with private bathroom. Based on our initial impressions of the reception area and courtyard, we decided to only check in for one of the three nights we had booked. Although our ‘deluxe’ room was spacious and clean with a great view of the lake, it was VERY basic with a mix & match of old tatty furniture far beyond sell-by date. The bathroom was very dated and the leaky toilet meant there was always a puddle of liquid on the bathroom floor. The shower mixer didn’t work so you had the choice of ice cold or scorching hot water and there was very little water pressure. Our biggest complaint is the bed – which was a wooden block with no mattress, so you literally slept on a rock-hard wooden base. We’ve slept on a variety of ‘authentic Chinese-style beds’ throughout China, but this was totally ridiculous and sleep was impossible! The other reviews also make reference to the delicious food – we can’t comment as the restaurant was closed due to the low occupancy rate. In summary, the previous reviews are very misleading and seem to completely ignore the shabby state of the guesthouse. If we were to review this guesthouse purely on location then yes it scores 5/5 – it’s quiet and overlooks the lake. On service, probably a 3/5 – the owners were sufficiently friendly and helpful. Sleep quality, comfort and the condition of the room score 1/5 – a bed with no mattress is unacceptable. Overall facilities – 1/5 – there are 2 restaurant tables in the small, dark reception area and one table & chair on the dilapidated ‘roof-top terrace’ swarming with bees. Our advice if you want to see the lake: stay in one of the highly-rated guesthouses in Dali old town, hire bikes and head down to the lake for the day.…
It was definitely my best experience in China, it's the first time that I feel so relaxed and comfortable since I left home 2 months ago. Wonderful scenery and plenty of things to do around the guesthouse! I've really enjoyed myself here! I'd planned to stay only 1 night and then head to Lijiang, but I ended up staying in this guesthouse 3 more days... The owners are so kind to me and they speak French. It's so relaxing chatting and having a tea in the garden or taking a walk on the lakeside, cycling to villages around or jumping in the crystal-clear water in the hot afternoon... A peaceful harbour to give yourself a treat after long weeks of travel!
