Thank you for your feedback. Guests staying in the rondavels are allowed to park their vehicles on the driveway near the rondavels for the purpose of off loading their luggage and again reloading their cars on departure. When the area was unfenced, guests used to drive all over the soak pits ( we are a rural backpackers without city drainage pipes) and completely destroy them with their vehicles plus their cars would then sink into the ground below. So we were forced to fence off the grassed area between rondavels and driveway. There is also a deep stream bed separating the rondavels from the driveway and if we had not built a fence , guests would drive their cars into 6 foot deep stream bed. So to ensure guest safety, to prevent guest cars destroying the soak pits , the fence is necessary. The distance to carry luggage if guests use the driveway to park their car and then offload their belongings is 5 to 10 metres only, a distance anyone can walk. They then return their to park their car in the proper lodge carpark 30 metres away. Our deep mountain location means that we pump water out of a stream to water tanks each morning and these tanks gravity feed water to the bathrooms and kitchens at the lodge. The new staff member on duty forgot to switch the water pump on at 6.30 am that morning which would have ensured you had water . Your rondavel is the highest on the property so takes a bit longer for gravity to feed water into the gas geyser but as soon as the water pump is switched on, it only takes 15 minutes for the water to feed the gas geyser in that rondavel. We felt so bad about your being inconvenienced that morning that Simone as owner of the Lodge, organized a letter of apology and a bottle of wine . And the next morning your shower functioning as normal. Easily resolved to make a happy story.

The Lodge is generally pleasant, workers very friendly, but you have no choice at all, we must pay for everything and there is no other option, since they are the only ones in this area of the montaña.Tienen wifii free but does not work or at least he did not during my stay .The price was R135 accommodation in shared room for 4 is not expensive but we had breakfast, lunch and dinner with them, because there is no other, but you're left with is hambre.O have !!!!! monopoly if they are there, with a grocery shopping and will be very budget !!!
Our website for Sani Lodge Backpackers is very clear on explaining that as a Backpackers, we provide fully equipped self-catering kitchens with stoves, fridges, microwave, kettle, toaster, cutlery, crockery and spices for guests so that those on a budget can bring all their own food and do all their own cooking. It is important to do one's homework when you go travelling . Perhaps you have never stayed in a Backpackers before and are only used to cities and hotels. IN previous years, most Backpackers did not offer a restaurant as all guests brought their own food. We run a restaurant open daily from 7.30am to 8pm specifically to offer guests the service of being able to have all meals , cappuccinos and cake etc for their enjoyment. To say that it for a monopoly and to cast blame on a place when there is another restaurant 1km up the road ,shops not far away and good self-catering facilities available clearly demonstrates that you did not prepare for your travels or read up on places you visited beforehand. Also it is obvious that you will pay for accommodation and meals if you have them as there is nowhere in the country or in the world where you can enjoy those facilities and services for free. Again being a rural establishment as opposed to being in the middle of a big city, internet connection is not always available as we very clearly explain to all guests due to ESKOM outages , storms, or one guest using up all the WIFI. There is definitely a language barrier here as had you been able to read all the information on our website and when you were here and talk to staff, you would have been able to understand.

Thank you for your review. The African style rondavel made of clay walls and thatch roofing is obviously not your thing. They are built for excellent insulation purposes and are free standing so more private than standard rooms.We understand that people from Europe can find this kind of housing so different to what they are used to and have a kind of phobia of African fauna , that they prefer more conventional rooms. Since your review, we have gone to check each and every single rondavel. There is a handbasin and not a sink ( maybe google translation is poor) with high quality expensive lavender hand wash ,lotion and shower gel we purchase all the way from the Karroo . We did find a spider in one rondavel but it was not ' full of spiders ' and here is our response to that which is in the information files and on notice boards;
INSECTS IN THE MOUNTAINS AND IN YOUR ROOM – THE LAWS OF NATURE!
Thank you for visiting Sani Lodge. We are delighted to share this beautiful natural haven with you. Our Lodge is situated deep in the mountains where the ecosystem is exceedingly healthy and in balance owing to the natural environment left undisturbed by man. At different times of the year particularly in the rainy season, there may be spiders, millipedes, mosquitoes, flies, moths, beetles, butterflies or birds visiting the room you are in .
They are NOT HARMFUL OR POISONOUS to you!!
The cleaning staff have been instructed to use a feather duster each day to clear a cobweb, remove a spider ,millipede or beetle etc. However should you find a spider, just remember that they do in fact prey on mosquitoes so they are useful to have in a room. The mosquitoes here do not carry malaria! Mosquito repellent is sold in the Giant’s cup shop for your convenience. Flies are around in summer months as they too are part of the natural ecosystem. We do have fly traps dotted around the property to reduce numbers but we do not use fly poisons as these chemicals are poisonous to bees. Moths are attracted to light as are mosquitoes and flying beetles, so at night whilst you are in your room with the lights on, keep windows closed to minimise insects coming inside. Then when you are ready to go to sleep, open your windows for fresh air and quickly switch off the light.
Thank you, Simone and Russell
Regarding a door separating the bathroom from the rest of the room, there are curtains to draw across suspended from a nice pine pole which is quite adequate to ensure privacy in the bathroom. We also had a good look at the cleanliness of the rondavel as this is one area we are exceedingly fussy about and we take very seriously. Along with your comment on it being ' totally uncomfortable', we are not at all sure what you meant. We can only assume that you have never travelled to Africa before and the idea of staying in a round house with a thatch roof was just not your thing. We have guests who come back time and time again to stay in these thatch rondavels as they simply love it! Each man / woman to their own. Regarding your conclusion that the rondavels are not particularly cheap, are you aware that we offer some of the cheapest accommodation in the Drakensberg and that despite being 4 star graded? At R245pppn, you only have to look in Coast to Coast to compare our prices to those places that transparently advertise theirs to realise we are cheap. The South African Grading Assessor has just been here to do the annual grading of Sani Lodge whereby photographs are taken of each and every room, restaurant, common room, bathroom etc and sent to a Grading panel to be assessed. The criteria for grading a Backpackers can be viewed on their website for your interest. There are plenty of other options at Sani Lodge if a rondavel is not your thing including standard rooms for R195pppn( these do not have an ensuite bathroom, kettle, tea, coffee, free sample sachet of fair Trade plunger coffee, Karroo lavender hand wash, lotion, shower gel and are not free standing). There is also a new luxury bedroom ensuite ( separate door between room and bathroom), no thatch roof, which we have built for R250pppn. We aim to please everyone by offering many different kinds of accommodation. A pity you did not talk to us in the office about alternative accommodation to suit your need or fill out a guest questionnaire making your suggestion . We are here to make guests as comfortable as we can. After more than 23 years running a Backpackers, we have plenty of experience and a genuine interest in the welfare of our guests. Thank you and stay well.
