Our Favorite Places to Get the Kids Outside
Our Favorite Places to Get the Kids Outside
We've traveled to 62 countries with our kids and have spent a lot of time outdoors, finding the very coolest adventures that we can. These are our favorite places to hike, go kayaking, watch the stars, head out on horseback, run down sand dunes, and belly slide with penguins.

Travel Babbo Kolarbyn is one of the most rustic places to stay in Europe, and it's amazing! We slept in a forest hut (built by the coal workers who used to live there), cooked over a campfire, canoed to a floating spa, learned bushcraft and didn't miss electricity or the internet at all. I'd love to return annually.
Región de Magallanes, Chile
Travel Babbo Patagonia is amazing, whether you're in Argentina or Chile. For some of the most stunning vistas, though, head to Chile. We like basing out of Tierra Patagonia, but there are plenty of lodges and campsites.
Europa
Travel Babbo One of our favorite countries in the world, and it's all about exploration and hiking. Stay at a few places around the islands and pick your hikes every day. And if you can, book a night on Mykines Island with Go Local Faroe Islands and you'll be the only people on the island - with tens of thousands of puffins - after the day trippers leave. Magical!

Travel Babbo We spent a week on the Rio Negro, fishing for piranha, swimming (the piranha don't bother you if you're in the middle of the river), hiking to waterfalls and abandoned rubber towns, and watching the stars. Amazing for kids and adults alike!

Travel Babbo I took my son to Greenland when he was 10 and we had a great time exploring the south, staying on sheep farms, kaykaking, and hiking and taking boats from place to place. Our favorite destination was Igaliku, where we stayed at this hotel, rented an ATV for a day and went fishing. So fun! And no internet for a week, which made it even better
Parque Nacional Banff, Canadá
Travel Babbo Horseback rides, kayaking/canoeing, running down ski slopes, hiking around gorgeous lakes? Yep, Banff and Lake Louise are amazing for kids.
El Paso County, CO
Travel Babbo We spend a lot of time in Colorado, typically basing out of Colorado Springs, and we're always hiking or on bikes.
Marruecos
Travel Babbo We went to the Moroccan Sahara from Marrakech and loved it, but it was a lot of driving for just one night in the desert. Highly recommend going for two or three nights and taking advantage of the sand boarding, camel rides, campfires and amazing skies.
Cícladas, Grecia
Travel Babbo We visit Naxos often - the best of the Greek island life without cruise ships! And we spend very little time indoors. Lots of beach time, lots of sitting at outdoor cafes.

Travel Babbo I love hiking the Great Wall. It's obviously all outside, and you can go as far as you want, depending on the section you choose. Restored Mutianyu is long enough to give the kids a good feel for the wall, and in the afternoon there typically aren't a lot of other tourists.
Croacia Central, Croacia
Travel Babbo A little touristy, but Plitvice is a great day trip from Zagreb. The lakes, with the waterfalls that connect them, are beautiful.
Valles del Este, Noruega
Travel Babbo Norway is maybe the best place in the world to get outdoors - especially in summer. Hike, jump into lakes, pick berries in the forest, raft, cycle. It has everything.

Zighy Bay, Omán
Hotel
Travel Babbo Oman is amazing for outdoor exploration, but we particularly liked the Musandam Peninsula - which is basically Six Senses Zighy Bay. Even in the hot summer, we were outside most of the time, from our private plunge pool to water sports to sunset hikes in the desert. And how cool is it that you paraglide to check in?
County Cork, Irlanda
Travel Babbo Kinsale is our favorite area of Ireland. The town is cute, but we also love exploring along the coast, hiking and picking berries.

Hotel
Travel Babbo Hiking, falconry in the forest, archery, horseback riding - a perfect Irish castle experience!
Provincia de Florencia, Italia
Travel Babbo Florence doesn't have much nature, beyond Boboli Gardens and a few parks, but it's our favorite city and we're constantly outdoors - walking, exploring the city's art and architecture, taking boat rides on the Arno, dining in piazzas. And without kids I've done a lot of cycling and Vespa riding around the countryside.

Olhuveli Island
Hotel
Travel Babbo An overwater bungalow destination all about relaxation and water sports? Six Senses Laamu in the Maldives is our choice. We especially love the bicycles that come with every villa - a perfect way to get around an island!
California
Travel Babbo Ojai is a perfect California getaway, and we're always outdoors hiking and riding horses.
Palawan Province, Filipinas
Travel Babbo Palawan is stunning, and we never ran out of things to do, including snorkeling, lots of kayaking to hidden coves, paddle boarding, hiking to island overlooks and just relaxing at the beach.
Greater Sydney, Australia
Travel Babbo We haven't explored the Australian outback yet, but whenever we're in Sydney we escape for a day to Bondi and enjoy the beach and the local farmer's market. Excited to explore the Mackay region this year, with kangaroos on the beach!
Provincia del valle del Rift, Kenia
Travel Babbo We loved heading out on safari throughout Tanzania and Kenya. Our favorite park, though, was the Maasai Mara, for the animals and the landscape. Take your kids on safari - it's amazing!
Montana
Travel Babbo It couldn't be easier to get to Glacier - fly in to Kalispell, rent a car, and 45 minutes later you're in a stunning National Park. Cycling, horseback riding, hiking, kayaking - it's all right there.
Región de Antofagasta, Chile
Travel Babbo The Atacama Desert is full of adventure, and only a little of it involves running down dunes. There are geysers, salt flats with flamingos and hot springs, and plenty of hiking and cycling.
Mundo
Travel Babbo Take your kids to Antarctica! I went with my daughter when she was eight and it was a great age. We kayaked, saw a lot of icebergs and whales, and hiked among tens of thousands of penguins. Plus snowball fights! Utterly kid-friendly.
